Here at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for Concert Band, and an original composition.

I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional bands alike; with some challenging and interesting woodwind and brass writing for all.

I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!

Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.

A Supreme Work of Art!

The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.

Allensbank (with an E – Canadians will understand, especially when they hear the section reminiscent of The Maple Leaf Forever) is a March originally written for Brass Band by Hugh Vaughan Wallis. It is in typical British March style. This arrangement by the composer is for standard Concert Band. Allensbank is a suburb of Cardiff, Wales where the composer’s ancestors farmed in the late 1800s, so the name seemed especially appropriate. Additionally, the name “Allen� has significance as being the name of the lake on which he owns a cottage, where some of the work on this march was done. Having received positive reviews of the work from such contemporary Brass Banding greats as Bob and David Childs of Cory and Black Dyke fame he has arranged it for both Wind Band and Brass Sextet.

Most band directors know only one of Claudio Grafulla's Quicksteps (Washington Greys). It is not well known that he wrote perhaps as many as twenty similar compositions. At the time he was writing he was writing for brass band. Captain Finch's Quickstep was written during or shortly before the American Civil War. I've arranged it for performance by the modern concert band. Listen to the .mp3. This one is particularly challenging and would probably be a Grade 3+ or 4. If Washington Greys is a ten on a scale of one to ten then this would be at least an eight. Make all the copies of parts you need.

Flexercise for young bands is a valuable tool for teaching various techniques. The eight exercises are a combination of finger slurs for the woodwinds, lip slurs for brass, and various percussion techniques. The exercises may be used in sectionals or full band rehearsals. In the clarinet part suggestions for slurring from open G to B or C are given. In trumpet, baritone, and trombone parts alternate fingerings and positions are suggested. Tempo and dynamics are not marked. Each band will have different needs in these areas.

A march dedicated to the Heroes of Telemark entitled ''Heltane frå Telemark (Sabateurs March). The melodies come from vest telemark where I worked from 2001-2006 as Band Director to Kviteseid Hornmusik. The melodies used in this new march entitled 'The Heroes of Telemark' are songs from Norway, Kviteseidsangen and Fjaasesundsangen are from Vest Telemark in Southern Norway, while Mellom bakker og berg is an old melody by Ludvig Mathias Lindeman (1812-1887). Keith Terrett has re-harmonised and orchestrated these fine melodies into an exciting march, in honour of the gallant 'Heroes of Telemark'. The original of Luto Quickstep is in the Moravian Music Foundation’s
holdings in Winston-Salem, NC. They have the only collection
of music from a southern band form the Civil War that I know
of. A group of men from that community enlisted as a group in
The 26th NC Regiment, C.S.A. during the Civil War. Eventually
they were captured. The Union Army kept their instruments but
somehow the music made its way back to Winston-Salem. The
original instrumentation is for brass band. This is for full modern concert band.

This sprightly little quickstep is in the Library of congress as a set of

parts for Brass Band. This edition has a brass band recording on the SMP

website. Even though the original publishing date is 1867 it was used

during the American Civil War.

Abide with Me

This arrangement will be useful to accompany congregational or choral singing (as it is in suitable keys) or it can be used as a purely instrumental piece. After a short introduction the tune is presented simply - a key change before the final verse leads to a majestic presentation of the tune with an effective descant.

This arrangement is suitable for school orchestras and ensembles as well as more experienced players. The arrangement allows for a great deal of flexibility in presentation and will sound complete with as few as four players yet the scoring allows for expansion up to a full symphonic orchestra, concert band or brass band

As with all music available from Opus 3 Music this arrangement has been well tried and tested in performance - In this case by the Campbell College Orchestra where this orchestra of around forty players use arrangements such as this regularly in Services and concerts in the college.
