Karol Kurpiński (1785-1857) was a romanticist and one of the most revered composers before Frédéric Chopin, and helped to lay the foundations of a national style and prepared the ground for Polish music of the Romantic period. He’s a largely forgotten figure, but in his day he was Warsaw’s leading opera composer.
A single-movement concerto by Weber’s Polish contemporary Karol Kurpiński is skilfully written, with a melancholy slow section whose melody is attractive. Elsewhere, the piece isn’t without its moments of note-spinning and overlong harmonic sequences, but it’s a welcome discovery nevertheless. The premiere of the work took place on the eve of Kurpiński's departure from Paris in 1823. Up to date only the first movement of the Clarinet Concerto, in the sonata allegro form with three themes, has survived.
Concerto will be a fine way to demonstrate the clarinetist's potential for brilliant display and heartfelt lyricism.
