Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.787451 Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by F. Griffin. Closer. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 117 pages. Gryphon Music Australia #2853443. Published by Gryphon Music Australia (A0.787451). Franz Schubert's Erlkönig (Erl King) is one of the most terrifying pieces of music to come out of the early 19th Century. It is a song with piano set to a poem by Goethe, depicting a father's desperate ride through the night with his dying son. The son is being taunted by the utterly malevolent Erl King, but the father cannot hear this and tries in vain to keep his son calm. The son's distress increases as the Erl King comes closer and closer, finally claiming the son's life before the father can get him to safety. In this unabridged arrangement the characters of the narrator, father, son and Erl King are delineated by a different combination of instruments for each. The relentless galloping of the horse is maintained throughout. This is an exciting work that any band at intermediate level will enjoy, as will the audience!
