This 7:10 minute piece is certain to be an enjoyable challenge for most wind ensembles.  With its constantly changing meter and time signatures and shifting moods, it is a portrayal of just a few minutes in the life of a 3-year-old boy, ranging from relentless, whirlwind-like energy and activity, to calm, restful passivity, then back to full liveliness again, and the eventful, extremely active life of a young teenage girl. The first movement was written while reflecting on young James Edwin. The second was written for Jessica Noelle. Both movements celebrate the happiness and joy of childhood.

The Polish national anthem ‘Mazurek Dąbrowskiego’ (‘Poland Is Not Yet Lost’) was a rallying call for Polish independence. It was officially adopted as the national anthem of Poland in 1926, although it had been its unofficial one since the end of the First World War in 1918. The lyrics were written by Józef Wybicki in July 1797. The music is a based on a Polish folk tune. This arrangement can be performed by as few as six players, or as many as a large wind ensemble.

Back in the Saddle was commissioned by and written for the Dos Palos High School Bronco Band, Dos Palos, California, under the direction of Mr. Keston Finney, in commemoration of the exciting return of the Instrumental Music Program which had been disbanded and eliminated for several years. The newly reformed ensemble premiered Back in the Saddle in their first Winter concert after regrouping.
