Do you have intermediate or advanced students in a very small band program? Are your students ready for more intermediate or advanced band repertoire, yet the band’s limited instrumentation holds them back? 

My Limited or Full series is geared toward the success of small bands with limited instrumentation. These pieces aim at giving small bands more advanced music within the framework of a young band arrangement. If you like the music, these pieces also sound great with a larger full instrumentation.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Leontovych’s CAROL OF THE BELLS is one of the most iconic and timeless Christmas carols in Western music. This arrangement inserts the classic carol into an exciting, lively concert band overture that is sure to interest both your students and your audience! This overture begins with a loud and bombastic riff, accompanied by a lively accented background rhythm. The introduction then gives way to a soft and lively melody in the flutes and high woodwinds. The full ensemble then enters, combining traditional carol with the lively accented rhythm. The piece then softly passes the melody between sections. The melody is further passed around as instruments are added. The piece finally gives way to a bombastic combination of the traditional carol and the introductory riff. The melody is then softly passed between sections once more, and then this section finally builds to a full orchestral finish. With its distinctive Russian flavor, MARCH OF THE CZAR'S BRIGADE depicts a pass and review of military troops on a snowy winter's day. Starting quietly, the sound slowly grows to a strong B section, then marches away into the distance. This G-minor work is ideal for any concert or festival.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Medium Easy / Grade 2 / suitable for middle school or small high school bands

FEATURES:
- All winds (including tuba!) have melody at least once.
- Simple trombone parts (generously cross-cued in Horn, Euphonium)
- 2nd Clarinet remains below break.

CHALLENGES:
- Use of dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythm in melody.
- Use of low register for clarinets. (low E, F, G#)
- Tuba solo (cued in other parts)
- Muted Trumpet 1 solo (unison line with other instruments)
- Dynamics; articulations; a few 16th-notes in all parts.

RANGES:
- All parts are well within 2nd-year ranges: Flute to E-flat above staff (only once); 1st Clarinet to C above staff; 2nd Clarinet remains below break; Trumpets to 3rd space C (1st Trumpet to E, once); Trombone to C above staff; Tuba to C on staff, down to D just below staff.

MINIMUM INSTRUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS:
Flute, 2 Clarinets, Alto or Tenor Sax or Horn, 2 Trumpets, 2 Trombone, Bass Line, Percussion.

PERCUSSION: Parts for 5 players:
Percussionist 1 = Snare Drum
Percussionist 2 = Bass Drum
Percussionist 3 = Crash Cymbals, Sleigh Bells
Percussionist 4 = Bells, Chimes
Percussionist 5 = Timpani (3 or 4 drums)

The third movement from the four movement 'Suite in Sea' written for clarinet and piano by Kara Williams, 'Brew Time March' has been orchestrated for wind ensemble by the composer and has since proven to be a favourite with performers and audiences.
 
We follow a young sailor as they excitedly hear the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee (brew) and sit on the bow to watch the waves… lost in thoughts, the young sailor unexpectedly hears the sound of work recommencing, and scurries back, making it just in the nick of time… waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time! 
 
Opening with the 'Stand Easy' (break time) bugle call, Brew Time March is full of familiarly-sea-worthy sounds, and is a fun concert march that would be a great addition to any ensemble's library.
 
In the style of a traditional military march, unless otherwise specified, notes should be played slightly detached throughout. Ensure the bass solo has plenty of attitude, and the rhythmic accompanying parts let the melodies breathe. Use a small set of crash cymbals (if parade-style cymbals are not available) - your percussionist will thank you! Also, hit the cymbals together slightly off-centre for zing and dynamic control, and hold the edges of the cymbals against the body to choke the ring where indicated. Keep this march a very steady two-feel throughout; however, feel free to completely stress the upper woodwinds out by going as fast as musically possible where marked at the end :-)
 
Brew Time March runs for around 2:45 and is scored for full wind ensemble; however, it will work without one, some, or all the following parts: piccolo, 4th clarinet, baritone sax, bass clarinet, bassoon, horns in F, and bass trombone.

This concert-sized (8.5x11) publication of the Sousa-Damrosch setting of THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER is in the original and most sing-able key of A-flat. The 1917 harmonization by Walter Damrosch remains, while Sousa’s arrangement has been slightly modified to meet today’s modern concert band instrumentation and a couple of melodic rhythms have been altered to fit the official lyrics. Phrase markings have been added to assist in rehearsal and performance.

Player's parts include the lyrics set as a block of text on the bottom half of the page.
