It is a beloved lake of Madison County that gives beautiful sights and unique activities for all ages. The name stems from the presence of wild cherry trees near the water's edge, according to Allen Morris' book of place names.It is my hope that Cherry Lake March will provide students with a song that they will enjoy learning to play, and provide other music educators with a teaching tool that can be used to motivate and encourage their students.Cherry Lake March is dedicated to all of my former music students in the Madison County Florida School System, who I had the privilege of teaching from 1974-2016.

Jazz swing style began in the United States in the 1930s. It was America's favorite popular music form from about 1935 to 1945. This piece is a tribute to that style. Escapade in Swing begins in a moderate, laid-back feel with an ample sprinkling of cool. The piece then changes to a much faster Lively, Driving Swing tempo. A four-measure transition separates the coolness of the first part from the heat of the second part.The second part includes 2-measure written solos for clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and euphonium. Some of these solos are cued in other instruments. Directors can use discretion in assigning the solos: Solo passages can be played as written or ad-libbed, and each written solo can be assigned as a section soli.Escapade in Swing provides ample opportunities to teach lessons in jazz style, jazz notation and techniques, maintaining a steady tempo, intonation, soli and ensemble playing, and improvisation. Be sure to begin and maintain (don't rush!) the initial tempo of M.M.=108. These wereChristian songs which described Bible stories (Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho) or about living with the spiritof God (Every Time I Feel the Spirit). Sometimes the spirituals described the hardships of slavery (NobodyKnows the Trouble I've Seen). Most interestingly, some spirituals had hidden meanings. In Swing Low, SweetChariot it appears that the singer is talking about dying and going to heaven, but in actuality, home refers to aplace of freedom, and crossing the river Jordan means overcoming the obstacles to freedom.

Of course, I had to select a medley of appropriate pieces, but somehow could not assemble compositions that were both short enough and very playable by my group. That left mewith the task of writing my own arrangement of military anthems.I pay tribute to the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. What is conspicuously missing, however, isthe United States Air Force Song. After the assembly, I was also asked, What, no Air Force Song?I tried a version of Military Jamboree with the Air Force Song, but because of the meter, 6/8, I found it tobe a lot more difficult for my students. They could play everything else, except the 6/8 rhythms. So, the musicteacher in me made the difficult decision to remove the United States Air Force Song from the finalarrangement, and thus, making it more playable for a developing band.

One of our favorite songs that he sang was TheFar North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of hermovies. Years later I transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell methey recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch'ssong. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes inthe border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada.The original arrangement, for string quartet, was premiered by the OdeonQuartet on October 21, 2003, at Seattle's TownHall.

Into letter A is where the story takes flight talking of the march of the grand armies, the might of the Roman Colosseum, and the grandeur of Rome in its height. Like all music this piece should be played with passion. With thoughts of might, majesty, and power.

While teaching music for SaydelCommunity School District in Des Moines, Iowa, I taught the round to elementary students and concluded that the folk tunewould lend itself well to young instrumentalists. Consequently, I set out to arrange the round for emerging band.After an introduction based on motives and rhythms of the round, the tune is initially played by an alto saxophone solo (oroboe). After a transition from the key of F Major to E-Flat Major, the band divides into three groups to play the three-voiceround. The entire round is repeated twice, exhibiting a lengthy crescendo and eventual diminuendo caused by the threeinstrument groupings ending their voices in the round.Having students perform a simple, yet lyrical round provides for a variety of educational opportunities. Similar to youngvocal ensembles, performing a round helps students to securely play with a group that is doing something different thanother sections of the ensemble, which ultimately assists in the transition to playing within a smaller, individual section orindependent part. Reflections on a German Folksong contains simplistic rhythms, which allows students to primarily focuson phrasing, articulation, tone quality and dynamics.

But the solemnity gives way to the merry fiddle tune of abarn dance. Awistful waltz in a minor mode contrasts their hardship and loneliness. The main theme returns a newkey, signifying determination and confidence. The piece ends as it began, with a query expressed by the violins,pondering what the future may hold.

No matter if it's an arrangement of a specific piece, or an original composition, I find myself wanting to view a movie merely for the score.When I was growing up, Westerns were a ubiquitous genre in Hollywood. In addition, New York City had a number of television stations that offered them as well. What all of these films and television programs had in common was, that they always had a strong, catchy and folksy theme. Prime examples were the themes to Bonanza, Wyatt Earp, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.I wrote The Opening of The West with the goal of having some catchy, folksy and iconic themes that people would remember. I would like to think that this could eventually become an iconic western score.
