Listeners will hear the sound of a woodpecker, dove, and the rustling and shivering of animals in trilling winds amidst chilling harmonies. Following the statement of the carol theme in brass echoed by glockenspiel, a beautiful snowfall enhances this musical winter scene.  PERFORMANCE NOTES: An inexpensive plastic dove bird call can easily be obtained at a sporting goods store, and these work quite well. If needed, it can be amplified from a speaker placed in the back with the percussion setup. A synthesized harp part played by a keyboard is included with glissandos written out & cues are provided in complete absence of the harp or synthesizer. English Horn & Double Bass can be omitted and aren’t integral to the piece.  Probably a grade 4 piece.  Roughly 3 mins in duration.    .

The piece features a whirling musical motif that is passed around the instruments while growing in intensity. The title refers to a Dust Devil, or a type of tornado of dirt found in the southwestern United States, but listeners could also imagine the kind of devil that is red, has a tail, horns, and a pitchfork!

The Circus Cavalry embodies the style of marches and descriptive light-music similar to Leroy Anderson. The Circus Cavalry follows the form of traditional marches, but ends with a descriptive coda in the original key. Listeners can imagine the opening parade of performers, clowns, and animals under the big top circus tent. After the main performance is finished, the coda portrays the clowns’ prolonged merriment, which results in a whip crack from the ringmaster to keep the show on schedule. The Circus Cavalry is perfect for any circus, carnival, or children’s themed band concert! The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow.  I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois.  The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul.  I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise. The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter.  The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories.  The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future.  The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed.  The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.
