Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1371307). María Teresa Gertrudis de Jesús Carreño García (December 22, 1853 – June 12, 1917) was a Venezuelan pianist, soprano, composer, and conductor. Over the course of her 54-year concert career, she became an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the Valkyrie of the Piano. Carreño was an early adopter of the works of one of her students, American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) and premiered several of his compositions across the globe. She also frequently performed the works of Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843–1907). Carreño composed approximately 75 works for solo piano, voice and piano, choir and orchestra, and instrumental ensemble. Several composers dedicated their compositions to Carreño, including Amy Beach (Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor) and Edward MacDowell (Piano Concerto No. 2). This lovely lullaby ('The Sleeping Child') dates from 1872 and was originally for solo piano but arranged for concert band as part of an ongoing project to bring more works into the repertoire by women composers. #arrangemegoals2023.

He wrote his own libretto, basing it on the Italian play L'amore delle tre melarance, or The Love for Three Oranges by Carlo Gozzi, and conducted the premiere, which took place at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 30 December 1921. The 'March' was used by CBS in the radio-drama series 'The FBI in Peace and War' from 1944 to 1958 and also by Prokofiev himself in his ballet, 'Cinderella'. This arrangement uses all the colour of today's symphonic band and would make an excellent programme item in a concert of opera music.

Published by KyleMac Music (A0.1215499). Gene Autry, the Singing Cowboy, made this song famous in 1949. Based upon a book by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L. May, Marks wanted to put the popular 1939 Montgomery Ward story into song. Johnny Marks, a decorated World War II hero, wrote several popular Christmas songs besides Rudolph. The song’s translation into several languages even had an effect on Finnish Christmas tradition – Rudolph is now head of Joulupukki’s sleigh (the Finnish Santa)!  The only difference is that the Finnish reindeer don’t fly.This arrangement has a fun swing style to it. Harmonization is slightly more advanced from a Grade I tune, but the rhythms and ranges are very approachable for young musicians. The style lets them experience a standard swing feel.The percussion is written for a drum set but can be separated as a traditional part for concert band. Sleighbells can have as many players as you want. I often had children come from the audience and give them little toy sleigh bells to play. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1380758). Use It Up and Wear It Out is a song by US-based dance and soul group Odyssey that was released as a single in 1980. It firstly emerged as a B-side, but later re-released as an A, going on to spend twelve weeks on the UK Singles Chart, including two at No. 1, however failing to make commercial success in the US. The song was written by Sandy Linzer and L. Russell Brown and produced by Linzer, featuring retro (and distinctive) use of disco and siren whistles. A hi-energy cover by the duo Pat and Mick, produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, reached No. 22 on the UK Singles Chart ten years later in 1990, helping to raise funds for the charity 'Help a London Child'. This late disco classic is sure to liven up any concert, indoor or outdoor, and the whistles will certainly attract attention from far away!

Marie-Juliette Olga Lili Boulanger (21 August 1893 – 15 March 1918) was a French composer; her older sister was the noted composer and composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. As a child prodigy born in Paris, Boulanger's talent was apparent at a very young age; at the age of two, she was already singing melodies by ear. Her parents, both of whom were musicians, encouraged their daughter's musical education. In 1912, Boulanger competed in the Prix de Rome but during her performance she collapsed from illness. She returned in 1913 at the age of 19 to win the composition prize for her cantata 'Faust et Hélène', becoming the first woman to win the prize. Boulanger grew up in a time of musical transition and her music fits easily into what was becoming defined as a post-Romantic style. She finished this 'Pie Jesu' (1918) towards the end of her life, but the first of Lili Boulanger's sketches for the Pie Jesu are to be found in a composition book she used between 1909 and 1913. Scholars such as biographer Léonie Rosenstiel and Olivia Mattis speculate that Boulanger intended to write a complete Requiem Mass but did not live to complete it. This arrangement has been created from the original solo voice, string quartet, harp and organ for modern concert band as part of an ongoing project to bring more works by women into the worldwide repertoire.

An admirer of Saint-Saëns, he composed around 160 works until his early death at the age of 35, probably from tuberculosis. His best-known composition is ‘Suite Gothique’ (1895), now a staple of the organ repertoire. The third movement 'Prière à Notre-Dame' is probably the most famous movement (along with the concluding 'Toccata') and has been arranged for many ensembles over the years; this fresh version for full concert band includes additional parts for percussion and alternative transpositions to allow greater flexibility for smaller ensembles and is sensitively cross-cued throughout, whilst still retaining the essential 'organ' sound as much as possible.

Promises, Promises is a musical with music by Burt Bacharach, lyrics by Hal David and a book by Neil Simon, based on the 1960 film 'The Apartment' written by Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond. The story concerns a junior executive at an insurance company who seeks to climb the corporate ladder by allowing his apartment to be used by his married superiors for trysts. The song 'Promises, Promises' happens right towards the end of the musical where things pretty much have fallen apart, made perfectly clear in the music by very agitated meter changes and angular harmonies. Released in 1968, the song was featured on an album by Dionne Warwick shortly before the musical debuted on Broadway and has since been covered by other artists, including Sean Hayes as part of the 2010 revival production.

Houdini is a song by English-Albanian singer Dua Lipa. It was released on 10 November 2023 as the lead single from Lipa's upcoming third studio album. The single debuted at number one in Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia and Greece, number two on the UK Singles Chart and in the top ten in Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland. On 27 October 2023, she shared a close-up picture of a key between her teeth, accompanied by the phrase catch me or I go; this was followed by a teaser of the song on her social media a few days later, hinting at the song title. A rearranged combination of numbers would spell out the title Houdini, named after escape artist Harry Houdini. Fans of Lipa also drew parallels to English singer Kate Bush's 1982 song of the same name, who also references Houdini by presenting a key in her mouth on the cover of her album 'The Dreaming' (1982). This catchy pop number is bound to be popular with younger players and audiences are sure to catch on to the disco beat.
