Johann Sebastian Bach. His music is the foundation on which so much of our musical heritage is based. But what if he had reappeared and composed in the style of future generations? That question is musically and whimsically pondered in this composition. It opens with a setting of his hymn “Christus, de runs selig macht�. We then hear the subsequent variations as he may have used his melody. The first is in the classical style similar to Mozart, which is followed by a Romantic era Viennese waltz style, a la Strauss. He next appears in the late 19th century as a march composer. In his most recent appearance (that we know of), he writes in the swing style of the 1940’s. This piece, which is sure to be an audience favorite, provides the director with limitless opportunities to teach about the Phrygian mode and to discuss many eras of music history and the styles and composers associated with each, while giving the students the challenge of playing and learning to quickly transition to the various styles with music that is both challenging and fun.

Minka, Minka had derived from the Ukrainian folk tune Ikhav Kozak za Dunaj and was written by Semen Klimovski.  Many composers had adapted this tune for their works, notably Ludwig van Beethoven and Carl Maria von Weber.  This arrangement tries to capture the Eastern European feel that one may characterize (or caricaturize).      

This arrangement started off as an assignment while taking Composing and Arranging for School Bands with Dr. Scott Watson (Alfred, Hal Leonard, Wingert-Jones) at Central Connecticut State University in the summer of 2014.    

Minka, Minka is arranged in band-friendly C-harmonic minor.  A few items to remember:    
- Upper winds have a minor second trill on concert Ab to A?  
- The section starting at 53 should be played as delicate as one would allow.  
- The section starting at 69 should appear to gain momentum.  
- The section starting at 88 should be equal or stronger than it has first appeared.

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is a Christmas song that originated with a poem by Emily Huntington Miller (1833-1913), published as Lilly's Secret in The Little Corporal Magazine in December 1865. The song's lyrics have also been attributed to Benjamin Hanby, who wrote a similar song in the 1860s, Up on the Housetop. However, the lyrics now in common use closely resemble Miller's 1865 poem.

The music has been attributed to John Piersol McCaskey, a school principal and former Mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who claimed to have written the song in 1867. The Johnny mentioned in the song who wants a pair of skates is McCaskey's late son, John, who died as a child. [Wikipedia]

The arrangement is for a full concert band and includes an optional piano part (Not on the score). There is also a descant part in verses 3, 4 and 6 for Flute/Piccolo and/or Clarinet and Trumpet. There also parts for Eb and F Horns.

Gene Autry, the Singing Cowboy, made this song famous in 1949. Based upon a book by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L. May, Marks wanted to put the popular 1939 Montgomery Ward story into song. Johnny Marks, a decorated World War II hero, wrote several popular Christmas songs besides Rudolph.
The song’s translation into several languages even had an effect on Finnish Christmas tradition – Rudolph is now head of Joulupukki’s sleigh (the Finnish Santa)!  The only difference is that the Finnish reindeer don’t fly.

This arrangement has a fun swing style to it. Harmonization is slightly more advanced from a Grade I tune, but the rhythms and ranges are very approachable for young musicians. The style lets them experience a standard swing feel.
The percussion is written for a drum set but can be separated as a traditional part for concert band. Sleighbells can have as many players as you want. I often had children come from the audience and give them little toy sleigh bells to play. This was always a big hit.

Eli's Comin' is a song written and recorded in 1967 by American singer-songwriter and pianist Laura Nyro. The song was first released in 1968 on Nyro's album, 'Eli and the Thirteenth Confession' and covered the following year by the band Three Dog Night, which reached number 10 in the Billboard Top 100. Other cover versions include artists such as trumpeter Maynard Fergusson and The 5th Dimension. This arrangement has been adapted from the jazz ensemble version by Michael Sweeney.

'Street Player' is the opening track on Chicago 13, the eleventh studio album by American rock band Chicago, released on August 13, 1979, by Columbia Records. The song is a cover, having previously been performed by Rufus and didn't chart very highly, although the album eventually was certified Gold. It is primarily known as being sampled for the 1995 hit The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall into My Mind) by The Bucketheads, the 2009 hit I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) by Pitbull and the 2013 remix by dance music producer Tradelove. The original recording featured a long trumpet solo by Maynard Ferguson; this arrangement, however, has been shortened, although still packing a punch with its distinctive brass lines - it should still be accessible to most bands with some careful rehearsal to get the rhythms together and should be a sure-fire hit with your audience.
