But what if he had reappeared and composed in the style of future generations? That question is musically and whimsically pondered in this composition. It opens with a setting of his hymn “Christus, de runs selig macht�. We then hear the subsequent variations as he may have used his melody. The first is in the classical style similar to Mozart, which is followed by a Romantic era Viennese waltz style, a la Strauss. He next appears in the late 19th century as a march composer. In his most recent appearance (that we know of), he writes in the swing style of the 1940’s. This piece, which is sure to be an audience favorite, provides the director with limitless opportunities to teach about the Phrygian mode and to discuss many eras of music history and the styles and composers associated with each, while giving the students the challenge of playing and learning to quickly transition to the various styles with music that is both challenging and fun.

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is a Christmas song that originated with a poem by Emily Huntington Miller (1833-1913), published as Lilly's Secret in The Little Corporal Magazine in December 1865. The song's lyrics have also been attributed to Benjamin Hanby, who wrote a similar song in the 1860s, Up on the Housetop. However, the lyrics now in common use closely resemble Miller's 1865 poem.The music has been attributed to John Piersol McCaskey, a school principal and former Mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who claimed to have written the song in 1867. The Johnny mentioned in the song who wants a pair of skates is McCaskey's late son, John, who died as a child. Published by KyleMac Music (A0.1215499). Gene Autry, the Singing Cowboy, made this song famous in 1949. Based upon a book by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L. May, Marks wanted to put the popular 1939 Montgomery Ward story into song. Johnny Marks, a decorated World War II hero, wrote several popular Christmas songs besides Rudolph. The song’s translation into several languages even had an effect on Finnish Christmas tradition – Rudolph is now head of Joulupukki’s sleigh (the Finnish Santa)!  The only difference is that the Finnish reindeer don’t fly.This arrangement has a fun swing style to it. Harmonization is slightly more advanced from a Grade I tune, but the rhythms and ranges are very approachable for young musicians. The style lets them experience a standard swing feel.The percussion is written for a drum set but can be separated as a traditional part for concert band. Sleighbells can have as many players as you want. I often had children come from the audience and give them little toy sleigh bells to play.
