Abraham’s Daughter: March from the Civil War ♫ by Septimus Winter (1861) ♫ with When Johnny Comes Marching Home by Patrick Gilmore a.k.a. Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,� and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.� ♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter� in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter� pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns� “Listen to the Mockingbird� and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?� ♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? And don't you think I oughter. The volunteers are a-pouring in From every loyal quarter, And I'm goin' down to Washington To fight for Abraham's daughter. ♫ At the beginning of the war, the majority of soldiers, North and South, were fighting to uphold their view of government, each side justifying its position by quoting the Constitution. Southern States saw each State as a sovereign, independent nation. Abraham Lincoln insisted that the United States were one nation. For Abraham Lincoln, the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union. Johann Sebastian Bach. His music is the foundation on which so much of our musical heritage is based. But what if he had reappeared and composed in the style of future generations? That question is musically and whimsically pondered in this composition. It opens with a setting of his hymn “Christus, de runs selig macht�. We then hear the subsequent variations as he may have used his melody. The first is in the classical style similar to Mozart, which is followed by a Romantic era Viennese waltz style, a la Strauss. He next appears in the late 19th century as a march composer. In his most recent appearance (that we know of), he writes in the swing style of the 1940’s. This piece, which is sure to be an audience favorite, provides the director with limitless opportunities to teach about the Phrygian mode and to discuss many eras of music history and the styles and composers associated with each, while giving the students the challenge of playing and learning to quickly transition to the various styles with music that is both challenging and fun.

Misty is a jazz standard written in 1954 by pianist Erroll Garner. He composed it as an instrumental in the traditional 32-bar format and recorded it for the album Contrasts (1955). Lyrics were added later by Johnny Burke. It became the signature song of Johnny Mathis, appearing on his 1959 album Heavenly and reaching number 12 on the U.S. Pop Singles chart later that year. The song has been recorded many times, including versions by Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.[Wikipedia]

Gene Autry, the Singing Cowboy, made this song famous in 1949. Based upon a book by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L. May, Marks wanted to put the popular 1939 Montgomery Ward story into song. Johnny Marks, a decorated World War II hero, wrote several popular Christmas songs besides Rudolph.
The song’s translation into several languages even had an effect on Finnish Christmas tradition – Rudolph is now head of Joulupukki’s sleigh (the Finnish Santa)!  The only difference is that the Finnish reindeer don’t fly.

This arrangement has a fun swing style to it. Harmonization is slightly more advanced from a Grade I tune, but the rhythms and ranges are very approachable for young musicians. The style lets them experience a standard swing feel.
The percussion is written for a drum set but can be separated as a traditional part for concert band. Sleighbells can have as many players as you want. I often had children come from the audience and give them little toy sleigh bells to play. This was always a big hit.

Always on My Mind was originally conceived as a ballad written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James and first recorded by country artist Brenda Lee in 1972. The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both country and pop categories. Elvis Presley's recording was the first commercially successful version of the song, followed by a 1987 hi-NRG/synth-pop interpretation from Pet Shop Boys (which reached UK number one and made US Top Ten). This version by PSB came about in 1987 as part of an anniversary show called 'Love Me Tender', to mark 10 years since the death of Elvis Presley (who had also charted well with the song) - in November 2004, The Daily Telegraph placed the version at number two in a list of the 50 best cover versions of all time and ten years later, a public poll compiled by the BBC saw the song voted the all-time best cover version. The PSB cover has recenbtly been used in the acclaimed British film 'All Of Us Strangers', launching it back into popularity again - this arrangement features, towards the end, an ad lib repeated section where your lead alto sax can really bring down the house!

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is a Christmas song that originated with a poem by Emily Huntington Miller (1833-1913), published as Lilly's Secret in The Little Corporal Magazine in December 1865. The song's lyrics have also been attributed to Benjamin Hanby, who wrote a similar song in the 1860s, Up on the Housetop. However, the lyrics now in common use closely resemble Miller's 1865 poem.

The music has been attributed to John Piersol McCaskey, a school principal and former Mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who claimed to have written the song in 1867. The Johnny mentioned in the song who wants a pair of skates is McCaskey's late son, John, who died as a child. [Wikipedia]

As each instrument’s ranges are stretched high and low, so are the intricacies of each passage that exemplify each instrument’s unique technicalities. Patriotic Salute is not only satisfying to the audience members, but also enjoyable to the performers. If you are looking for a straight-forward, yet exciting piece for your Patriotic celebrations, this is the piece for your library!

When A Child Is Born is a popular Christmas song. The original melody was Soleado, a tune from 1974 by Ciro Dammicco (alias Zacar), composer for Italy's Daniel Sentacruz Ensemble, and Dario Baldan Bembo. The tune was based on Damicco's earlier tune Le rose blu published in 1972. The English language lyrics were written a few years later by Fred Jay (Friedrich Alex Jacobson). They do not make specific mention of Christmas. Fred Jay's lyrics have been sung by many artists, most successfully by Johnny Mathis in 1976, whose version was the Christmas number one of that year in the UK. [Wikipedia]
