Composed by Jules Massenet. Arranged by Peter Graves. 19th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival. 354 pages. Peter Graves Orchestras, Inc. #977847. Published by Peter Graves Orchestras, Inc. (A0.1394366).

Jules Massenet was a French composer of opera and theatrical works, and at one point was the leading composer of opera in France. Massenet wrote seven suites for orchestra of which this is the seventh. This suite was first performed in 1882 and was inspired by memories of the province of Alsace and the Franco-Prussian War.

It is an inspiring work for both the performer and listener and has already enjoyed a debut performance at one Americas leading summer music festivals.

Composed by Jules Massenet. Arranged by Yves Bouillot. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and Parts. 113 pages. Yves Bouillot #881894. Published by Yves Bouillot (A0.1291229).

In 1879, a flood occurred in Szegedin, on the banks of the Tisza River, in Hungary. Catastrophic floods destroy 95% of the city in. Only 300 of the approximately 6,000 houses remain standing. International aid will then be directed to the city to rebuild it, according to new plans, in five years. The ring roads still bear the names of the towns which participated in the reconstruction to this day. Le Figaro organized a festival at the Opéra Garnier to help the victims. On this occasion, Jules Massenet wrote a Heroic March for large orchestra (including 8 saxophones). Here is a version for Concert Band, a tone lower than the original. Grade 4.

Composed by Gustave Louis Ganne. Arranged by Marc Oliver. 20th Century. Score and parts. 75 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2347279. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733026).

Gustave Louis Ganne was one of the leading composers of light music in France during his lifetime. As a young man he enrolled at the Paris Conservatory and while there Ganne studied composition with Jules Massenet and organ with Cesar Franck. Soon after leaving the conservatory Ganne made a name for himself with his compositions: marches waltzes mazurkas and many other types of music. He is best remembered for his theatrical works first his ballets and later the operettas. Ganne was also a highly competent conductor in the theaters of Paris and later in Monte Carlo. In Monte Carlo he established a series of extremely popular orchestral presentations known as Les Concerts de Louis Ganne. In 1901 he was elected president of the Societ des Auteurs Compositeurs et Editeurs de Musique. The French government later presented him with the Legion of Honor with extra orders. Ganne was loved and admired by those who knew him because of his character and prodigious talent. He died in Paris on July 13 (or 14) 1923. Marche Lorraine is one of Gustav Louis Gannes most well loved marches. It radiates a luminous sophisticated elegance. This march has played an important historic role in France and the Alsace Lorraine area.

Composed by Louis Adolphe Mayeur. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 204 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3133407. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534138).

Louis Adolphe Mayeur (1837 - 1894), was a Belgium clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and conductor who spent most of his musical career in France; Entering the French Military in 1855, he was a clarinetist in the Second Régiment of the Cuirassiers (Mounted Calvary) of the Garde Impériale. A student of Klosé at the Paris Conservatory, he received his First Prize in Clarinet in 1860. One of the inner circle of Adolphe Sax (along with fellow Belgiums Jules Demersseman and Jean-Baptiste Singelée, whose “Quartet for Saxophones“ was premièred with Mayeur playing and Demersseman conducting), Mayeur took up the saxophone and was quickly engaged as the saxophone soloist in the Opera House of Brussels, La Monnaie (the Mint). Sax commissioned a number of works from Mayeur for the saxophone, which were published by his company and used in his class at the Paris Conservatory.

By 1871, Mayeur was also named Saxophone Solo with the Paris Opera, performing in opears and ballets by Halévy, Meyerbeer, Thomas, Saint-Saens, Massenet,   Délibes and Paladlihe. It would appear that sometime during this period, his relations with Sax became difficult, culminating in his publications of works by Buffet-Crampon, one of Sax’s rival companies and one of the main protagonists in the series of lawsuits which led to Sax’s bankrupcy. Mayeur’s own declining health lead to his death in 1894.

The Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur Rigoletto dates from 1877. The contrasting sections use motifs
from arias and duets from Verdi’s opera. Florid cadenzas seperate the various sections, but those passages
should be played in the manner of “bel canto†ornamentation, always lyrical and songlike.

This is the score and complete parts for the concert band version. Versions are available from Musik Fabrik for piano, for Symhony Orchestra (on rental : 2222/2000/Timp/hp/strings)
and for Concert Band (for sale). The score plus solo part for each of the versions is available for sale, as well as the individual parts for the concert band version
