I'm tired of hearing people say slow pieces are easy because there slow or there boring because they don't have fast notes. With this piece I hope to change people opinion on slower pieces. What We Used To Know was inspired for my reason I love slow pieces and I hope everyone finds a reason to adore them like I have.

This high energy piece has been arranged for concert band where each Part 1 is levelled near grade 1.5, Part 2 near grade .75. When Part 2 has a more complicated part, support is given with Part 1. For levelled percussion, the Drums part has been extracted to Snare Drum and Bass Drum parts.Ensembles can play Part 1 by itself, or just Part 2, but there are impressive rhythmic complications when both parts are played together. This piece can be played as a side-by-side for 2 different levelled bands (e.x., Junior/Senior Bands) or in class to allow students to work within their own abilities. March of the Shadows would be perfect for a Halloween orAutumn Concert.March of the Shadows begins with a whistle! It calls the show by announcing each new section of the piece. (Astudy of form.) It even reacts to a momentary modulation. The whistle part has all sorts of fun staging potential,including having it played by the director! The initial whistle is followed by a percussion introduction which sets thebeat. Seven percussion parts, three of them optional, have been included so that everyone in a large percussionsection will be kept engaged and out of trouble! The body of the work includes two alternating themes, one dark andshadowy in minor, the other bright, heroic and slightly syncopated in major. Every part gets the melody at somepoint, even the low brass and woodwinds! The song had been written for performances by bass and tenor vocal duet.The song begins: Dark the shades of night are growing, keen and chill the wind is blowing, bright the watchfire lights are glowing, 'Tis the battle eve…The piece appears to have been composed in the early 1890s with the first recorded performance at the Athenaeum in Melbourne (Australia) in May 1893. ‘The Battle Eve’ was very popular during the First World War period with many performances at many concerts related to the war effort in Australia. This included patriotic concerts held across Australia during 1914. The first of these was a patriotic concert held at the School of Arts, South Grafton, New South Wales, on Tuesday 1 September 1914. Miss Eva Beatson performed the song with proceeds from the evening totaling 52 pounds. Originally written for large orchestra, Cuban Overture is a tone poem composed in 1932, inspired by a two-week holiday which Gershwin spent in Havana in the February of that year. It was originally called ‘Rumba’, but the title was later changed to better describe the character and colour of the music.  Caribbean rhythms and Cuban percussion instruments predominate, and Gershwin was keen that the bongo, claves and maracas should be visible and prominent (position them right at the front so all the audience can see - they'll love that!)  The main theme was influenced by ‘Échale Salsita’, a popular song of the day, by Ignacio Piñeiro. The premiere was a great success, and the piece has remained a popular part of Gershwin’s oeuvre. Transcribed for symphonic band, with supporting contrabass instruments and European parts.
