A march dedicated to the Heroes of Telemark entitled ''Heltane frå Telemark (Sabateurs March). The melodies come from vest telemark where I worked from 2001-2006 as Band Director to Kviteseid Hornmusik. The melodies used in this new march entitled 'The Heroes of Telemark' are songs from Norway, Kviteseidsangen and Fjaasesundsangen are from Vest Telemark in Southern Norway, while Mellom bakker og berg is an old melody by Ludvig Mathias Lindeman (1812-1887). Keith Terrett has re-harmonised and orchestrated these fine melodies into an exciting march, in honour of the gallant 'Heroes of Telemark'. A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! Nearer, My God, to Thee arranged for Young Concert Band, is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…. The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank. A new arrangement of music  especially for ’’National Day’’ in Norway, which falls on the 17th of May each year.

Bands all over the land march around their towns and villages, in celebration of Norway’s independence from Sweden.

The little set consists of ’’Ja vi elsker’’, ’’Fagert er landet’’, ’’Gud signe vårt dyre fedreland’,’’Smaa barnas nasjonalsang’’, ’’Kongsesangen’’, an original march entitled ’’17 mai (Constitution marsj)’’, and a small compilation of three marches which include,’'Alle fugler'', ’’Gammel Jegermarsj’’ and ’’Mellom bakkar og berg’’ by Lindeman; and finally Norge i rødt, hvitt og blått   (Norway in red, white and blue).

These arrangements will work very well with just four players.  As long as you cover all four parts, you are guaranteed a very rich and full-sounding arrangement.

If you have some percussion players to augment your group, it will sound even better.

This arrangement comes with parts for flexible band.

The Norwegian Constitution Day is the National Day of Norway and is an official national holiday each year. Among Norwegians, the day is referred to simply as syttende mai (meaning May Seventeenth), Nasjonaldagen (The National Day) or Grunnlovsdagen (The Constitution Day), although the latter is less frequent.

An original work of mine entitled ''Gettin' Bluesy'' written for young concert band. Composed in a bluesy style with flattened 3rds & 7ths evident in the melody, this is a lovely piece with which to calm the atmosphere; and an excellent way to introduce a bluesy piece to your band members. The mood is melancholy, I did compose this after my cat sadly passed away when I was living in Norway. The melody is passed around the ensemble, akin to the conversational style one can observe in a Haydn string quartet. The brass have the opportunity for some transparent and soft muted work behind the melody scored in the woodwind. The bass guitar can be replaced with a double bass if desired. Your percussionists get the opportunity to play kit and also the vibes are used, a great work out all round! Here at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for Concert Band, and an original composition.

I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional bands alike; with some challenging and interesting woodwind and brass writing for all.

I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!

Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.

A Supreme Work of Art!

The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.
