A couple of years ago, I was thinking about how Elvis Presley in 1956 turned the Civil War-era ballad Aura Lee into a hit love song. Over time, I identified a half-dozen ballads and folk tunes that Presley and his writers reworked into hit tunes. I mused on Elvis’ popular title as the King of Rock and Roll, and thought of another king, as Karl L. King is often called the King of the Circus March. I decided to write a march paying tribute to both Elvis Presley and Karl L. King: March: The Kings.

I composed the march loosely styled on King’s famous circus marches but overlay the march with five original, public domain ballads and folk tunes later arranged into popular love songs performed by Elvis.

A narrative work, free of interpretation but with a story that must be told, a wanderer, a sleepwalker who wanders from kingdom to kingdom blinded by his lack of sanity. A knight, looking for an epic adventure with which to be accepted, has to kill this innocent wanderer, who has no fixed direction. At the end of the day their paths meet and the sleepwalker goes where he should be.

God Is Working His Purpose Out is an English Christian hymn. It was written in 1894 by Arthur Campbell Ainger as a tribute to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Edward White Benson. The original music for the hymn was written at the same time by Millicent D. Kingham but a number of other pieces of music have been used for the hymn in recent times.

The Refrain God Is Working His Purpose Out is based on Habakkuk 2:14; For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea. The hymn references God being always at work to realize his will for the world and for humanity. It also references Philippians 2:12–13 in that God works in humanity to act according to his purpose. [God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year: God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near; nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.] Verse 1

This arrangement is for full Orchestra or Concert Band or any combination of both ensembles and could be used to accompany the singing of the traditional words. – There is also an optional chorded Keyboard or Piano part. There is a Descant part for Flute, Clarinet and/or Trumpet that can be played in the 2nd and 4th verses.

An arrangement of a classic Sousa march. It's quite faithful to the original, with some instrumentation changes and a few tweaks here and there. It should be well within the capability of a school or college concert band. The dynamic markings are fairly unsubtle, but are crucial to making the piece work. Watch out for the sudden drops to 'p'!

A note about the parts: trumpets 2-4 are combined on the score for ease of reference, but are separated on the parts. Walking on Broken Glass is a song written and performed by Scottish singer Annie Lennox, included on her debut solo studio album, 'Diva'. Released on 10 August 1992, the single peaked at number one in Canada, number eight in the United Kingdom and Ireland and number 14 in the United States. The music video, directed by Sophie Muller, is stylistically reminiscent of 18th century period films such as 'Dangerous Liaisons' and features actors John Malkovich and Hugh Laurie. Available for concert band for the first time, much of the characteristic sound of the record has been retained, but with a key change towards the end and a moment to highlight your star alto sax player.
