Exoplanet 42 is dedicated to the Ashland Middle School Wind Ensemble Jenifer Carstensen director. With the piece I hope to share in the fascination of the art of music and the science of space exploration. Never before in human history have we had direct knowledge of planets orbiting a star other than our own sun. Using observation of star wobbles and other techniques scientists have identified distant worlds with names like Kepler-69c (pictured on the cover of the score in an artist's conception). The fictitious Exoplanet 42 is explored in the listener's imagination guided by the music. The planets numeration is a homage to the late writer Douglas Adams. The piece should be a big hit for Back to School 2015..

Something About You is a single released by British band Level 42 in 1985, in advance of its inclusion on the album 'World Machine' the same year. It is the only Level 42 song to have been a top 10 hit in the United States, where it reached no. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it was their second highest top 10 hit in the UK, reaching no. 6 on the UK Singles Chart (with Lessons in Love peaking at no. 3 the following year). In the music video, lead singer and bassist, Mark King, appears as a dark clown magician, representing the negative aspects in the relationships of other band members with their girlfriends, all played by actress Cherie Lunghi. Turn back the clock and inject a slice of 1980's jazz-funk into your band's next concert with this brilliant song, arranged to preserve the original key and stylistic elements of the classic track and subsequent live performances.

With its distinctive Russian flavor, MARCH OF THE CZAR'S BRIGADE depicts a pass and review of military troops on a snowy winter's day. Starting quietly, the sound slowly grows to a strong B section, then marches away into the distance. This G-minor work is ideal for any concert or festival.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Medium Easy / Grade 2 / suitable for middle school or small high school bands

FEATURES:
- All winds (including tuba!) have melody at least once.
- Simple trombone parts (generously cross-cued in Horn, Euphonium)
- 2nd Clarinet remains below break.

CHALLENGES:
- Use of dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythm in melody.
- Use of low register for clarinets. (low E, F, G#)
- Tuba solo (cued in other parts)
- Muted Trumpet 1 solo (unison line with other instruments)
- Dynamics; articulations; a few 16th-notes in all parts.

RANGES:
- All parts are well within 2nd-year ranges: Flute to E-flat above staff (only once); 1st Clarinet to C above staff; 2nd Clarinet remains below break; Trumpets to 3rd space C (1st Trumpet to E, once); Trombone to C above staff; Tuba to C on staff, down to D just below staff.

MINIMUM INSTRUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS:
Flute, 2 Clarinets, Alto or Tenor Sax or Horn, 2 Trumpets, 2 Trombone, Bass Line, Percussion.

I set out to compose a musical setting of the text in hopes that the words and music may be of comfort to others too in seasons of grief, adversity, or doubt. “My tears have been my food both day and night, and all the time, people ask, ‘Where is your God?’ But each day, the Lord pours His unfailing love upon me, and through the night, I sing His songs, praying to God who gives me life.� (Psalm 42:3, 8) I composed the piece originally for a cappella choir, but after finishing, I was inspired to create a transcription for Concert Band as well. This transcription may be performed separately, or combined with choir for more impact if desired.
