Operatic music was an important part of the band repertoire at the turn of the 20th century. Lucia di Lammermoor is a tragic opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. The libretto was loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The story concerns the emotionally fragile Lucy Ashton (Lucia) who is caught in a feud between her own family and that of the Ravenswoods. These motifs are taken from Rigoletto,  La traviata, Ernani and Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi, Lucia di Lammermoor and La fille du régiment by Gaetano Donizetti and La sonnambula by  Vincenzo Bellini.
