Saturday mornings were filled with Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid, and Hopalong Cassidy episodes with their own themes. The bad guy had his theme, as well as the good guy. You cheered, or you booed to the one you connected with. Big screen westerns almost always had their theme songs, and almost always sung by Frankie Laine.Western Legends is an homage to the radio, television, and film composers whose scores will always be etched on my mind.

Corta-Jaca (sometimes known as 'Gaúcho') is one of the earliest Brazilian tangos to be published and Chiquinha Gonzaga's most recorded song - the title translates as 'cutting the jackfruit'. Originally published in 1895, it is performed frequently as a solo piece or in ensembles drawn from the Brazilian tradition, featuring guitars, flutes and strings. This arrangement for modern concert band makes this classic tango available to musicians around the world in an effort to celebrate the achievements of women composers through the centuries and making their music more accessible.

It is typical of the ragtime music written in the early 20th Century and a lot of fun to play. It is about 3 or 4 minutes long depending on which repeats the conductor takes. It has parts not included in the original for bells, 2nd & 3rd Alto Sax and others so that it will fit well with the modern concert band. If you get it and there is any problem (wrongly transposed parts etc.) I will fix it. Just call me or e-mail me and we can talk. The Haunted Ballroom is a one-act ballet, in three scenes and an interlude, with music and libretto by Geoffrey Toye (former musical director for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company) and choreography by Ninette de Valois. It was first produced in London in 1934, and was revived several times, but much of the choreography is now lost. The ballet is a Gothic melodrama about a fatal family curse, involving dancing with ghostly partners. The original cast included Robert Helpmann (The Child Catcher from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang') and a young Margot Fonteyn. This arrangement for modern concert band of the main theme from the ballet has been prepared from the piano transcription by Reginald King. A charming slice of British light music for a more gentle addition to a Hallowe'en concert.

Published by Hambone Music (A0.1438470). A beautiful slow melody in 4/4 followed by a rousing 6/4 trek with fanfares then returning to the slow melody in 4/4. Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and intermediate level concert bands, school bands and symphonic wind ensembles should manage it easily. Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery.Part 2  It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme.Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind.  No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination.Part 4  The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

Waltzing Throught the Mid-west is Grade 2.5-3.0. This waltz uses three official state songs for source material, Hush-a-bye Ma Baby (Missouri Waltz), Beautiful Ohio (Ohio Waltz) and the Tennessee Waltz. It has one foot in traditional entertainment aspects from Wind Band's history, and the other foot in modern choices in tempo, time signature changes (including two juxtaposed feels that will challenge even your best students), along with chordal changes that keep it from sounding 'dated.' I feature several low instruments, giving them the limelight at times and with three mallet instruments written into the score, your melodic percussion have plenty to do. This piece lays well in more than one part of your lconcert line-up, including as  the feature piece.
