Adirondack Sketches was commissioned by the Town of Lake Pleasant, which is located in the southern Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, to celebrate its bicentennial. Written for the local community band (named A Pretty Good Band, Amy Winnie, director), it consists of four short movements, descriptive of my memories of places in and around my home town:

            1. Sunrise over Lake Pleasant
                A gradual expansion of sound based on the horn call at m. 3 brings the
                lakeshore from predawn darkness to brilliant sunlight.

            2. School Picnic at Moffit Beach
                A march/scherzo expresses the end-of-school exuberance of the school children.

            3. Canoeing on Kunjamuck Creek
                A gently flowing passacaglia, with hints of arch form, depicts the calm, wooded creek.

            4. Hiking up Hamilton Mountain
                An insistent ostinato bass suggests plodding footsteps as a fugue unfolds above, taking
                a group of excited hikers up the trail to the lookout atop the mountain.

The price includes license to make as many copies of each part as necessary.

Fantasy on Old Joe Clark is a tonally colorful and rhythmically exciting work based on a very popular old American fiddle tune used for the folk song Old Joe Clark. The lyrics tell the story of an eastern Kentucky mountain man known for his mischief. This musical fantasy starts peacefully at dawn and as the morning moves on the mischief begins and continues through the day. The day then ends as peacefully as it started. Download consist of 1 Score, 1 Timpani, 1 Cymbals, 1Bells, 1 Xylophone, 6 Flutes, 4 Alto Sax, 4 Tenor Sax, 3 Tuba and 2 each of all other parts. Parts include Baritone T.C. Duration 6:35. Grade 4.

Frank Frazetta was a Brooklyn-born painter who became the most influential artist in the 'sword and sorcery' fantasy genre. This suite consists of four movements, each depicting the drama found in the accompanying paintings. Dawn Attack features brief, churning motifs that propel the music forward. Egyptian Queen begins with an ancient horn call atop a jingling dance rhythm.Leaping Lizards (from 1989) consists of several monster movie cliches: Heavy angular brass motifs ending in a rising major seventh, screeching woodwinds, and frequent chromatic lines and augmented arpeggios. The Silver Warrior is monothematic in form, lending to its concise style. The music moves forward in hopeful resilience and ends as rousing as the icy mountain range that adorns the background of this scintillating painting.
