The opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan (The Tale of Tsar Saltan, of his Son the Renowned and Mighty Bogatyr Prince Gvidon Saltanovich and of the Beautiful Princess-Swan) by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) is based on the fairy-tale poem by Alexander Pushkin, and the libretto is by Vladimir Belsky. The four-act opera was premièred in Moscow in 1900. The Flight of the Bumblebee is a short interlude in Act 3, Scene 1, when the Swan-Bird changes Gvidon, the son of the Tsar, into a bumblebee so that he can fly and visit his father (Tsar), who is unaware of the existence of the prince.
