Composer's web store: https://www.sounded.us/baseline/product/merry-dont-you-know-by-david-ahrens-wind-band/“God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen” is a traditional English Christmas carol dating to the mid 17th Century. It was referenced by Charles Dickens in his 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol” but with the lyric:“God bless you, Merry Gentleman!May nothing you dismay!”The phrase “God rest you merry” historically meant “may God grant you peace and happiness”. “Rest you merry” was used both in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” and “Romeo and Juliet”. Over time, there has been confusion over this title due to changes in common language usage. The word ‘merry’ is an adverb of rest and not an adjective of Gentlemen.“Pat-A-Pan” is a traditional Burgundian French Christmas carol written by Bernard de La Monnoye and published in 1720. The text calls for the bringing of a drum and flute to play for newborn Jesus Christ in worship. The title is onomatopoeic for the sound of a drum, as is the additional lyric “tu-re-lu-re-lu” for the sound of a flute.“Yigdal” is a Jewish hymn and prayer that is a poetic adaptation of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith. The text is attributed to 14th century poet Daniel ben Judah. The melody dates to the 17th century or earlier. It is traditionally sung for morning prayer and as the conclusion of Shabbat evening services. Upon hearing Yigdal, English Methodist Thomas Olivers adapted this melody for use in his Christian hymn “The God of Abraham Praise”, which is a paraphrase of the ben Judah doxology, and was first published in 1772.“Merry! Don’t You Know?” is a playful melding of these sacred songs, acting as a reminder that Christmas is a time to be merry and joyful as we celebrate the nature, power, and love of God.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.733027 Composed by Charles Edward Duble. Arranged by Marc Oliver. 20th Century. Score and parts. 53 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2347281. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733027). Every genre of music has its one-hit wonders-composers or performers who are forever known for just one piece of music. In classical music, two composers come to mind: Johann Pachebel for his Canon in D and Emil Reznecek for his overture to Donna Diana. I am certain that they have written a lot more music, but we only know them for the above-mentioned works. The same is true in wind band music. The composer in question is one, Charles E. Duble. His one big hit is his circus march, Bravura. One of his lesser known marches is Wizard of the West. It was originally written in 1908 and dedicated To A. R. Wheeler, Musical Director, Howes Great London Shows. To this day, however, this occidental expert remains a mystery because he has not come out from behind the curtains. However, the western wizard does make his presence known in the euphonium section-especially in the trio.

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.733090 Composed by Charles Edward Duble. Arranged by Marc Oliver. Contemporary. Score and parts. 77 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #3115021. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733090). Charles Edward Duble was a tall, lanky trombone player who, as a circus band musician, was always seeking an opportunity to play a practical joke on someone. Duble's more serious side emerged when he composed for the many circus bands of the time time. Battle of the Winds can be a march, or it can be a battle among the wind players in the band. Duble's allegiance to the low brass gives the euphoniums, trombones, and tubas an edge at times, but the contest is fascinating from the introduction to the stinger at the end. Merle Evans and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's Circus Band performed it for years during their pre-game show.
