Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1028005 Composed by Becca Schack. Contemporary,Folk,World. Score and parts. 111 pages. Ingenue Music #3140847. Published by Ingenue Music (A0.1028005). Commissioned by The Association for Music in International Schools AMIS. Premiered in Bangkok, Thailand in January 2011, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos. Program Notes: The image of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes, kept reappearing in my mind as the main focus for this piece. According to myth, the islands of Hawaii owe their existence to Pele who ran away from her jealous sister, a sea goddess, to these tiny islands. Her sister sent tidal waves and Pele answered by sending fiery lava into the ocean, making new land as it cooled. The spirit of Pele lives on in the craters of the volcano, watching over the islands, reminding us that fiery eruptions and emotional upheavals are followed by new life and change. Pele, unpredictable and powerful, makes her entrance with a loud bang of brass and percussion, followed by the entire ensemble joining in. As the trumpets trail off, words from the ancient Hawaiian chant E Pele, E Pele are heard moving between each section in contrasting rhythms, as the tuba and low brass unfold the main theme. This chant is performed in Hawaiian culture accompanied by hula kahiko, an ancient style of hula dancing. The vibraphone plays a tranquil melody reminiscent of a Hawaiian wind chime softly blowing in the wind. The congas and rainstick evokes a tribal element. The piece is meant to juxtapose the multi-faceted natures of Pele. Syncopated rhythms in the winds paired with big brass and percussion represent her passion and violent temper. The playful, quiet, lingering sections led by the flute and vibraphone represent her irresistible and enchanting mystery as she creates new land and the living things that inhabit these magnificent islands. Hawaiian Chant: E Pele e Pele ka`uka`ulï ana Ha`ina ka inoa no Pele la ea English Translation: O Pele o Pele, moving along In the name of Pele

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976737 Composed by Manuel de Falla. Arranged by Robert Myers. 20th Century,Folk,World. Score and parts. 113 pages. WheatMyer Music #6621545. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976737). Andaluza, taken from Manuel de Falla’s piano suite Cuatro Piezas Españolas, is aimed at the mainstream high school band in the United States at the grade 4 level. Boisterous tuttis, intimate solos, and passionate melodies make for an engaging excursion into Spanish folk music that allows students to explore the adventurous harmonies of de Falla's impressionistic vocabulary. The variety of colors and energy in the modern concert band amplify the life, drama, and humanity de Falla poured into his piano version. Andaluza will thus prove a thrill for both performers and audience as it celebrates this life, drama, and humanity.Soprano Sax is called for on an expressive solo but is fully cued in oboe. The absence of this instrument need not prevent an integral performance of the music.Optional parts are provided for Eb Clarinet, Treble Clef Baritone, and Double Bass for those bands having these available.View a full preview score of Andaluza at my website (wheatmyermusic.com/product/andaluza) or drop an email and I'll provide a pdf of the score for your perusal.Andaluza is the fourth member of Manuel de Falla’s Cuatro Piezas Españolas for solo piano first published in 1909. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. But it was so rewarding to have done so and I hope you find the rewards of listening just as much worth your effort.Robert MyersS.D.G.INSTRUMENTATION:PiccoloFlute 1, 2OboeBassoon 1,2Bb Clarinet 1, 2Bb Bass ClarinetBb Soprano SaxophoneEb Alto Saxophone 1, 2Bb Tenor SaxophoneEb Baritone SaxophoneBb Trumpet 1, 2, 3Horn in F 1, 2, 3, 4Trombone 1, 2Bass TromboneEuphonium TubaTimpani (4) Mallets: Xylophone, Glockenspiel, Vibraphone, MarimbaPercussion 1: Almglocken/Cowbell, Suspended Cymbal, Marimba, Snare Drum, Glockenspiel, Triangle, XylophonePercussion 2: Hand Cymbals, Suspended Cymbals, Snare Drum, Bongos, Mark TreePercussion 3: Tambourine, Castanets, Hand Cymbals, Rainstick, Gong, Tam, TamPercussion 4: Bass Drum, Suspended Cymbal, Gong, Tam Tam, WoodblocksOptional Parts: Eb Clarinet; Baritone T.C. 1, 2; Double Bass

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.978107 Composed by Francisca Gonzaga (Chiquinha Gonzaga 1847-1935). Arranged by Idalmo Santos. 20th Century,Latin,World. Score and parts. 23 pages. Idalmo Santos #6679863. Published by Idalmo Santos (A0.978107). The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the tango Gaúcho became popular, is one of Chiquinha Gonzaga's most recorded and best-known songs, along with Ó abre alas, Lua branca, and Atraente. It was born on the stages of musical theaters, where it was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national costumes Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at the Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa), the anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses to the music of Corta-jaca, helping to popularize it, especially after his version was recorded on disc by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca frequented other stages and repertoires: café-cantante, chope-berrante, rodas de choro... But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it achieved its glory. Performed on the guitar by first lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up nicknaming the administration of Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa made from the rostrum. When asked what was the corta-jaca he had heard so much about, he concluded: The lowest, the most vulgar, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions the corta-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and one does not want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces to blush and the youth to laugh! Never before in the history of Brazil had eminently popular music been performed at the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca has become a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, meriting recordings by, among others, Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, Turíbio Santos, countless bands, and some sung versions. It was written by the maestro also for singing and piano and small orchestra: oboe, viola, timpani, horns (bass), bassoon.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1383663 Composed by Francois Borne and Georges Bizet. Arranged by Harry Walker. 19th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Opera,Romantic Period. 205 pages. SCORE EDITIONS #968118. Published by SCORE EDITIONS (A0.1383663). Borne was a flutist with the principal opera company in Bordeaux as well as a composer and professor at the conservatory in Toulouse. Expert in both instrumental technique and in the development of the flute as an instrument, he is still recognized for his technical contributions to the Böhm flute. His Fantasie Brillante on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen is by far his most famous composition. Borne’s setting of Carmen’s luscious melodies – like those by Sarasate for the violin, and by Busoni and Horowitz for the piano – combine the virtuoso’s understanding of the solo instrument with a flair for the dance rhythms and passionate colors of the opera. Borne fills his setting with spectacular arpeggios that require fleet fingering and consummate breath control. Carmen’s brilliant Habanera, a traditional dance that she performs with castanets (and with abundant flirting), anchors the work. But the mood of Borne’s Carmen is far brighter than that of the fatalistic Gypsy girl of Bizet’s opera. In Borne’s showpiece, a set of brilliant variations on her showy Habanera leads to a triumphant close – in marked contrast with the opera’s violent, tragic ending. In this version, the composition was arranged for Solo Flute and Concert Band by Harry Walker.

Concert Band - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1284242 Composed by John McAllister. 20th Century,21st Century,Contest,Festival,Film/TV,Video Game. Score and Parts. 44 pages. John McAllister #875417. Published by John McAllister (A0.1284242). Mythos Unleashed is a musical odyssey that captures the enigmatic allure and captivating exploits of legendary heroes. The opening employs idiomatic chords, melodies, and motives to create a truly “cinematic†atmosphere that draws listeners in from the very first note. Then the piece “unleashes†and burns forward with passion and intrigue, with every section getting a moment to play melodic material. This thrilling addition to any concert program is the perfect opportunity for students to transport their audience on a magical journey back in time to the era of ancient heroes. This piece directly correlates with the Foundation Warm-Up Series. This series is designed to follow most beginning band methods. The early sets focus primarily on airflow, common patterns, and reinforcing concepts presented in the method books. As the series develops, the sets become more like a traditional band warm-up, including long tones, flexibility exercises, articulation, scale patterns, and a chorale.
