Composed by Various. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Christian,Christmas,Praise & Worship. Score and parts. 190 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6403623. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522188).

This essential collection may be all you ever need for your wind instruments at Christmas. It's a bargain price too! These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The publication consists of a four-staff score in concert pitch together with fifteen separate parts in various transpositions plus a simplified optional keyboard part. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. These four-part arrangements use flexible instrumentation so that you can exercise considerable control over the instrumental voicing or use them for non-standard ensembles. You can also create interesting instrumental tone color by omitting groups of instruments. If the ensemble is large enough you could omit brass instruments in the quieter sections, or use a solo trumpet against a woodwind background. There are endless possibilities.
The complete set includes: Part 1 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 2 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 3 in B flat, E flat, F and C and Part 4 in B flat, E flat and C. Parts 1 and 2 in C have been printed an octave higher than the pitch shown in the score because invariably the parts lie too low for flute or oboe. For elementary players, a Part 1 in C (low) is included at concert (score) pitch. Parts 3 and 4 in C are in the bass clef. The arrangements could be played by virtually any combination of conventional wind band instruments. Using the optional keyboard part they could also be used as solos, duets or trios. The scores and all the parts are contained in a single 190-page PDF file. Please note that these arrangements are not necessarily compatible with other Kirkpatrick arrangements published by Glyn Joseph Editions. The collection incuers the following favorite carols: Angels We Have Heard On High (Gloria); Lo, How a Rose E’er blooming (Es ist ein Ros entsprungen); O Come, O Come Emmanuel (Veni Emmanuel); The First Noel; Ding Dong! Merrily on High (Bransle de l’Officiel); O Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fidelis); Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Mendelssohn); Go Tell It on the Mountain; O Little Town of Bethlehem (St. Louis); O Holy Night (Cantique de Noël); Silent Night (Stille Nacht); Away in a Manger (Mueller); Joy to the World (Antioch); O Christmas Tree (Tannenbaum); We Three Kings (Kings of Orient); I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day (Waltham); What Child is This? (Greensleeves); God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen; Good King Wenceslas (Tempus Adest Floridum) and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

By Graham Hamilton. By Graham Hamilton. Celtic,Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Irish,Traditional. 70 pages. Hambone Music #1020604. Published by Hambone Music (A0.1440627).

The final movement of the 'Peebles Beltane Festival Suite' is rousing quick march, based upon the traditional Beltane Festal Song theme from the small town of Peebles in the Scottish Borders. The Beltane Fetstival which is celebrated every year has been going for almost 200 years.

The words to the traditional festal song are:

At Beltane in the aulden time, it was the custom gay, T
o gather on the village green and hail the festal day,
Huntsman gallant and sheperds grey, dought and blythsome men,
And Lassies blooming fresh and fair cam liltin’ doon the glen,
Through the greenwood haste away,... Sing aloud the festal lay,
Busk the the Beltane banner gay, to Peblis and the play.

Auld Neidpath, grim and grey wi’ years, looks doon wi war-scarred face,
And sentinels our royal toun wi’ majesty and grace,
Loyal sons of a fearless race, gather we here today,
And sing the auld-warld round-e-lay of ‘Peblis to the Play’,
Wave the Beltane banner high,
Ring the anthem to the sky,
While our silver stream rolls by,
The Tweeddale glen for aye.

Across the wild foam-crested wave, in distant lands of fame,
The exile oft wi’ pride recalls the dear auld Border hame,
And while we crown our Beltane queen, ‘mid flaming skies of June,
We pledge the leal hearts far a-wa and lilt our festal tune,
Honour is our watchword clear,
Truth our dauntless halberdier,
Liberty’s our heralds cheer,
Long live our Beltane Queen.

Composed by Keith Otis Edwards. 20th Century,Classical,Patriotic,Romantic Period,Video Game. Score and parts. 92 pages. Volitant Music #696670. Published by Volitant Music (A0.1092576).

The Siege of Veracruz took place from March 9 to March 29, 1847, during the war between the U.S.A. and Mexico. On March 25, the Mexicans called for a cease-fire to discuss surrender terms. Mexican officials pleaded that the women and children be let out of the city, but heroic US General Winfield Scott refused, believing this to be a delaying tactic and kept up the artillery fire. After the surrender and occupation of Veracruz, US troops marched on to capture Mexico City. Accordingly, the coda of this march proudly waves our national banner. The Trio uses the old (18th-century?) folk song Green Grow the Lilacs. Before writing this march, I had never heard the tune, but I wanted to use it because, despite it being a waltz, I'm amused by the apocryphal etymology of the epithet Gringo, which is said to have originated during the 1846-47 war when the Mexicans often heard the invading Yanqui soldiers singing that song -- Green Grow the Lilacs..

Composed by Nathaniel Hontz. 21st Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,March,Ragtime. 58 pages. TigerSong LLC #1006490. Published by TigerSong LLC (A0.1425731).

“‘Beacon Street March’ was born from the experience of being a Boston University pedestrian: students are adept at Dodging crowds, bikes, cars, tour groups, and green line trams. The march’s ragtime-like rhythms, percussive punctuation, and bouncy tone all reflect the syncopated gaits, quick stops, and half runs that get Beacon Street pedestrians where they need to go. It all culminates in a festive final strain, mirroring the Boston Marathon which runs down Beacon Street every year.

Premiered by the Boston University Concert Band, April 2024.
