Narhalla Marsch (Buutemars)

The Narrhallamarsch, often referred to as the Narra March, is a traditional carnival march that is associated with the Cologne Carnival in Germany. The Cologne Carnival is one of the largest and most famous street festivals in Germany, celebrated with various events and parades.

Music with Flexible scoring options permit creative ways for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation to be successfully performed. When instrumentation is less than ideal or when fewer performers are available, flexible scoring options can help provide solutions.

Many flexible scoring selections can be performed with as few as four like-instruments. While this flex-scoring selection can be performed by a quartet of like-instruments, the most successful configuration is with at least five heterogeneous wind instruments, plus some percussion. The full score has been revised and groups instruments in an easier to read format. This arrangement has been written to provide a light-hearted touch of humor to these familiar seasonal songs. From the polka-like countermelodies to the hint of a galloping, overly zealous horse, the intent is merriment during the Christmas Season. While horse-drawn sleighs bring to mind images of a bygone age, the melodies are as welcome today as ever!

In his Quadrille Un ballo in maschera Johann Strauss jr. processed motifs from the opera by Giuseppe Verdi. With it he continued a tradition of quadrilles  based on motifs by other composers. It premiered on 21 December 1862 at Volksgarten in Vienna. Die Fledermaus (The Bat) was Johann Strauss' most successful operetta and is still today frequently performed especially on German speaking  stages. Its overture in sonata form became also a popular and challenging concert piece. The operetta premiered, conducted by the composer, on  5 April 1874 in Vienna at Theater an der Wien. An der schönen blauen Donau  (The Blue Danube) is known all over the world and every year a fixed encore at the New Year's Concert of  the Vienna Philharmonic broadcasted in most countries of the world. Previous to the orchestra version it was premiered on 15 February 1867  in a separate version with male-choir. So it is a real challenge to create an arrangement of this famous piece, which may dare a comparison  with the original. Marching Strings was composed by Ray Martin (aka Marshall Ross) and performed by Ray Martin and his concert orchestra, it was used as the theme for Top of the form over most of its long run on BBC radio and television. It was broadcast on the BBC Light Programme 1948-67, then BBC Radio 2 (sometimes simulcast on BBC Radio 1) 1967-70, and BBC Radio 4 1970-86. The programme migrated to TV, where it ran from 1962-75, and was called Television Top of the Form. Here  scored for Concert Band with a full score and parts included. The Schützen (Riflemen's) Quadrille was composed by all three Strauss brothers together on the occasion of the Third German Federal  Shooting Competition in Vienna.
