The original cello solo in the introduction was performed by the arranger himself on trombone, but the musical director is free to let the solo be performed by any suitable instrument. It was premiered on 25 May 1878 in London theatre Opera comique and had one  of the highest performance rates of that time. The story is about love between people of different society classes on board of the British warship H.M.S. Pinafore  and mocks so about the British class system.  The arrangement of the overture is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra. Is was first time performed by Salzburg Wind  Philharmonic conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2023 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in  Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. First of all he was known as a king of marches: His Florentiner March and Entry of the Gladiators had worldwide success, but also some of his overtures and waltzes became very popular. Originally titled La rosa di Toscana, this concert march was composed in 1907. This arrangement was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Tyrol Austria and first performed at this orchestra's premier concert in 1997 in Innsbruck, Austria. It keeps the key of the orchestra version, while most band arrangements transpose a whole tone lower.
