Published by John McAllister (A0.778226). Pitt Street Bridge was commissioned by the Moultrie Middle School Band to be premiered at the 2020 SCMEA Conference. The remains of the Pitt Street Bridge lie in the Intercoastal Waterway and in what is now called Pickett Bridge Recreation Area. It is within walking distance from the middle school, and it is an integral part of Mt. Pleasant’s history. Originally designed as a trolley bridge that connected Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant, Pitt Street Bridge is now a haven for recreation and relaxation. The lively melodies throughout the piece depict the festive activities that take place on Pitt Street Bridge. The piece opens as though one is standing on the Pitt Street Bridge, gazing out at the immensely beautiful surroundings. Slow and serene as the sun blankets the harbor and the marsh. The bridge has a tremendous history, dating back to the revolutionary war, which is where the melody begins. Deconstructed from part of Sir Peter Parker, a song about the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. A distant memory, this melody will find itself in many ways throughout (three notes rising diatonically followed by a falling 3rd). The woodwinds pattern in the opening (which also appears throughout), represents the ripples in the water, flowing gently back and forth. The military past of the bridge is hinted at in two ways. The snare in the opening, reminiscent of the rudimental style and several harmonies throughout that hint at an Americana style. As the piece picks up tempo, the hustle and bustle of 1920s Charleston comes to life. Harmonically, everything is still built off of the foundation of the original tune, but now we’re in bright and joyous times and people are transported to and from the island in the Roarin’ 20s. The optimism abounds until the climax of the piece as the bridge (musically speaking), fades into the past. At the finale, one is standing on the bridge with the distant melody still played on the flute.

If the cowbell player is good at hamming it up (and rocking out!), you could try the following staging suggestions: Cowbell player plays with intensity and lots of movement, and starts moving in measure 17 toward the front of the band, ending up next to the conductor in measure 24, bowing to the audience on beat 4. Conductor gives a stern look and gestures to student to get back in the percussion section (possibilities: slit throat gesture with side of first finger followed by pointing forcefully to the back, or similar gestures). Student slinks back, starts playing cowbell again, but quietly this time. Playing gradually picks up intensity, and player starts again toward the front in measure 41, reaching the front by measure 48. In measure 48, either A) Conductor waves hands violently for student to stop, or B) have a couple of students place a large blanket over the cowbell player. This works, but only for one measure (player quits and doesn't move in bar 49). Cowbell player resumes playing with a vengeance in measure 50 (either in spite of the teacher or under the blanket!). Make sure your new rock star takes another bow at the end of the piece. Have fun, and may your life always have More Cowbell! Correlated with Accent on Achievement, Book 1, page 27. Arnage is a commission, a 1991 Commande d'Etat from the French government. The work is named after the town in which it was premiered. The first movement is slow and atmospheric with the solo trombone weaving in and out of the accompaniment. Despite a short interlude where the tempo picks up followed by a cadenza, the piece returns to the original quiet and atmospheric nature of the beginning. The second movement is vigorous and dynamic. The animated trombone is punctuated by rhythmic comments from the ensemble. The work winds down to a quiet passage before being taken back by the vigorous ensemble. This continues to the wild coda to the end. The duration is 12 minutes. This is a manuscript score, thus the reduced price.The Premiere was by Pascal Renou, trombone, with the Harmonie Municipal d’Arnage conducted by Francis Rouillard in Arnage, France on June 12, 1992.

In addition, there are parts for Strings as we are preparing for a Tour which combines a Sinfonia and Junior concert band making a big sound. The keyboard parts have the chords written and notation for both approaches and I arranged a shortened version for our House Music Competition and it worked really well. The arrangement works without the 2nd or 3rd parts as the piano picks up the harmonies along with the strings.
