Housman‘s poems by George Butterworth, reorchestrated for Chamber Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by the Maidstone Wind Symphony for their recent Concert of Remembrance entitled A Time For Peace.Composed in 1911 for baritone voice and piano, this collection of short pieces utilises poems from A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. The words have been woven into a delicate and moving composition, with the emotions contained in the text expertly drawn out through use of dynamics and phrasing.The delicate nature of the original pieces has been kept, with the voices of the wind orchestra giving a new timbral twist to the music. The reality of growing up in wartime is prevalent in the theme of the music and is captured well by Butterworth’s original. There has been a few orchestral settings of these songs, but this arrangement is to be the first for wind band.Premiered by Martin Hindmarsh and a selection of the Maidstone Wind Symphony players, the performance was delicate and true to the original essence of the piano accompaniment. This piece tells the ficticious story of an inept, incompitant, yet quite pompous prefect conquistador and his poor attempt to colonize an indigenous village.  The natives keep out smarting him, and sabotaging his plans.  Things get so out of hand, that he can't even keep his own people in line.  This makes the Prefect irate and ill-tempered, more so to his own company, than to the natives!  What am I to tell the queen?!.  I can't have my name soiled like this!.  Upon hearing that the Prefect's superior officer, the Legate of Iberia, will be coming to check up on his progress, he comes up with a plan.  He'll make a deal with the natives to make it look like he's been kidnapped and murdered.  Dressed as conquistadors, the natives won't say a word and the Prefect's second in command will say that he's been killed.  To the Prefect's surprise, this actually worked and the Legate was fooled.  Upon the Legate returning back to Iberia, the now defunct Prefect conquistador has made arrangements with the natives in exchange for food and supplies to fool the Legate each time he visits.This rousing march is a great opener or closer for any concert.  Perfect for high school, college, or municiple/adult continuing level community band!  The music here perfectly encapsulates this swashbuckling, yet haphazardous story!

Strong, a reporter for the North American Newspaper Alliance, who visited Vanzetti in prison in May 1927, three months before his execution.    «If it had not been for these things, I might have lived out my life talking at street corners to scorning men. The Little Drummer Boy (originally known as Carol of the Drum) is a popular Christmas song written by American composer Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941.  First recorded in 1951 by the Trapp Family, the song was further popularized by a 1958 recording by the Harry Simeone Chorale; the Simeone version was re-released successfully for several years, and the song has been recorded many times since. In the lyrics, the singer relates how, as a poor young boy, he was summoned by the Magi to the Nativity of Jesus. This Christmas carol has had a number of different versions, starting out in the 18th Century as a French carol, Quelle Est Cette Odeur Agreable?. It has been translated into English as What Is This Fragrance? Other lyrics were written for the same tune, such as Thou Who Wast Rich Beyond All Splendor by Frank Houghton in 1934, based on 2 Corinthians 8:9: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. In 1997, Houghton's wife Dorothy modernized his lyrics as Lord, You Were Rich Beyond All Splendor for the Haven of Rest Quartet to record with the title For Love's Sake. It has also been recorded by Marilyn Baker in the UK and Keith & Kristyn Getty in the UK & Ireland.
