Maurice Ravel was only 24 when his piano solo Pavane Pour une Infante Defunte, which translated means Pavanne for a dead princess, became the rage of the drawing rooms and salons of Paris in 1899, but the work already held the unmistakable stamp of his style. Ravel orchestrated the work in 1910. Jerry Brubaker presents this lovely work in a Concert band setting with all of the lush melodies and harmonies of the original work but with simplified ranges and a comfortable key. A marvelous choice for a truly beautiful piece of impressionistic literature!

Johann Strauss jr. wrote Prince Baryatinsky March in 1858 in Pavlovsk, Russia, located 30 kilometers south from St. Petersburg, the capital of the Russian Empire. It was firt performed there and dedicated to Prince Aleksandr Ivanovich Baryatinsky, Russian General and Field Marshal. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg. Though left unfinished by the composer before his death, Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor lives on in the repertoire thanks to orchestrations by Alexander Glazunov and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The overture, a concert favorite of audiences since its posthumous premiere in 1890, is here reworked for wind ensemble. The piece is a collection of arias, duets, and dances from the opera itself, coursing in and out of love themes, marches, and fanfares, all to end in a vibrant flourish.

The Polovtsian Dances form an exotic scene at the end of act 2 of Alexander Borodin's opera 'Prince Igor'. The work remained unfinished when the composer died in 1887, although he had worked on it for more than a decade. A performing version was prepared by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov in 1890. Several other versions, or completions, of the opera have been made. The dances are sometimes performed with chorus and last around 11 minutes. Themes from the Polovtsian Dances have been used widely in popular culture, notably the 1953 musical 'Kismet'; the most prominent example is the popular standard Stranger in Paradise, adapted from the Gliding Dance of the Maidens, which opens this piece. This great piece, a staple of the orchestral repertoire, would form a substantial showpiece in any concert and important solos have been cross-cued for smaller ensembles.

The introduction to Lehar's lesser known operetta The Little Prince works well as a stand-alone work (with the addition of a bar at the end to close it). There is plenty of variety in the piece, despite its relatively short length.
It has plenty of interest for all players in the band, although the key makes the Tenor and Baritone Sax parts a bit challenging.
