Do You Hear How Many You Are? for Concert Band was originally written in April and May of 2010 for SATB choir. I made this concert band arrangement in 2012. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Storm and Calm is a piece that I composed after hearing that two of my friends were fighting and I was being pulled both ways in the conversation. I felt very conflicted about the whole situation, and I tried my best to vent those confused feelings through the music that I was hearing during all of it. I was amazed at what transpired when they both heard the piece, as it seemed to bring them to a new understanding of sorts, getting them to see how their conflict had begun to damage those around them. While I try not to dwell on what the piece evolved from, it's a constant reminder that even the biggest problems can result in the most miraculous of solutions.

PROGRAM NOTE:  Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been  commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert  of Premieres each May.  He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual  Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year.  Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque  composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both  a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal  names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart).     The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old.  The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D,  two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in  A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum.  I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat,  alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone  horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas,  bass drum, and glockenspiel.  As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for  young, less experienced players.  I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these  parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is  probably the one which will probably need to be played.  Joel Jacklich El Centro, California,  July 4, 2015.

The Search for Hope is a work for wind orchestra comprised of three distinct motifs that tell a story of looking for hope.  Beginning with a crisp and airy feeling, this intensive work gives us a sense of taking flight over a diverse human landscape in the time reflecting the global pandemic, and the ensuing personal struggles, economic problems and conflicts that continue to have lasting consequences for so many people in the world.  Opening with a “questioning phrase,� illustrated by using a rising minor third motif, the music develops into a more ominous melody that is carried by the bass instruments.  From that questioning phrase the music sharply transitions into a second motif where the music picks up the pace with its own distinctive phrase and musical features, suggesting a time of invasions and military clashes, while tugging and moving our emotions back and forth with a single impression, and raising the question:  Where is hope found? With the final motif the tempo begins to slow and express a more tempered and solemn course of thought, punctuated by the higher brass that takes the lead in carrying the phrase of the music by using a descending minor third to carry the mood.  Allowing the music to reflect and express the vocal inflections used as when a mother gently speaks the name of her child with love and support—the very essence of hope.

This musical setting of the Kyrie was written for choir by Italian composer Antonio Lotti, who spent his entire career at the famous St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.The adaptation of choir literature for use by wind players provides an ideal tool for teaching basic musicianship such as intonation, balance, and blend as well as the advanced techniques of phrasing, nuance of line, and accuracy of ensemble articulation. Because the work consists of only 4 voices, players can more readily hear and address individual, section, and ensemble problems.The score and each part is notated with the specific voice assignment (S = soprano, A = alto, T = tenor, B = bass). This allows the conductor to rehearse like groups by simply asking for all players with the alto line and so forth.
