It is typical of the ragtime music written in the early 20th Century and a lot of fun to play. It is about 3 or 4 minutes long depending on which repeats the conductor takes. It has parts not included in the original for bells, 2nd & 3rd Alto Sax and others so that it will fit well with the modern concert band. If you get it and there is any problem (wrongly transposed parts etc.) I will fix it. Just call me or e-mail me and we can talk. I've been doing this for several years now and I make every effort to eliminate mistakes but sometimes....................

This is a fun arrangement of SKIP TO MY LOU (and won’t you have fun saying the title?). I use a fail safe beginning band instrumentation. 1. Flute, Oboe, Bells 2. clarinet (trumpet double) no playing across the break 3. Alto Sax 4. Tenor Sax (horn double) 5. Trumpet (clarinet double) 6. Horn (tenor sax double) 7. Trombone, baritone, bassoon (bass clarinet and bari sax double) 8. Tuba 9. Percussion (snare and bass drum) I include a bass clarinet/baritone TC part and a bari sax part. Measures are numbered in both score and parts. I keep the horns low to work on accuracy and a big sound instead of doubling the alto part. I retired last year after 38 years of Texas band directing. This song was first written as a poem by Sergeant William Darwin, 7th Battalion AIF, whilst recovering in hospital before printed copies of the poem in Kirkleston, Scotland and including it in a letter to Mr. James Walker, Bendigo, dated 24 June 1916. The poem was dedicated to the Anzacs who fell at Gallipoli as well as those who were still living. The poem was published in the Bendigonian on 21 September 1916.

As of 2016 the beloved song Happy Birthday entered the Public Domain! Here is a unison arrangement for your concert bands to play. All of my students keep this in their folder and we play it for anyone who has a birthday and wants to celebrate with the class. Written in a band friendly key of Eb, I hope you and your students will enjoy playing Happy Birthday for one another. Since every instrument has the melody students can even play this for their family and friends at home!

This is a concert band arrangement of three Irish tunes that can be performed as a sing-a-long, a vocal solo or as band alone. Perfect for St. Patrick's Day or other community events. If performed for band alone some of the repeats can be omitted. Lyrics have been included. It is perfect for all bands from intermediate middle-school on up including and especially community/town bands. Ranges are kept moderate and easier parts can be substituted if one if too difficult. A couple of years ago, I was thinking about how Elvis Presley in 1956 turned the Civil War-era ballad Aura Lee into a hit love song. Over time, I identified a half-dozen ballads and folk tunes that Presley and his writers reworked into hit tunes. I mused on Elvis’ popular title as the King of Rock and Roll, and thought of another king, as Karl L. King is often called the King of the Circus March. I decided to write a march paying tribute to both Elvis Presley and Karl L. King: March: The Kings.

I composed the march loosely styled on King’s famous circus marches but overlay the march with five original, public domain ballads and folk tunes later arranged into popular love songs performed by Elvis.

PROGRAM NOTE: Rosemary - That's for remembrance.... In 1882, Sir Edward Elgar jotted down in his musical notebook a piano piece he titled Douce Pensée (Sweet Thought). There it remained until 1913 when he got it out again, revised it slightly, re-titled it Rosemary - That's for remembrance, and published it for the first time. The title comes from Ophelia's Garland Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet, where she says, There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. In 1915, the First World War had been raging in Europe for a year, and many British composers and poets had turned to artistic means to mourn those who died in the trenches of across the Channel. Elgar orchestrated the work at that time. In 1925, London publisher W. Paxton published arrangements by C. Jenkins made for brass and reed band and for military band; however, these are now out of print and no longer available. In the fall of 2015, Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, asked me to make an arrangement of Rosemary for the Eighth Annual Concert of Premieres, a series Sturman had begun in 2008, commissioning new works by known composers, and commissioning new arrangements of pieces he felt were worthy works in the public domain that were no longer in print and/or were written for ensembles containing instruments no longer part of the standard modern band or orchestra.
