Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.723125

Composed by Juan de Arriaga. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (ASCAP). Classical. Score and parts. 32 pages. Joel Jacklich #3377517. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723125).

PROGRAM NOTE:  Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been  commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert  of Premieres each May.  He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual  Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year.

Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque  composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both  a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal  names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart).

The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old.  The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D,  two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in  A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum.  I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat,  alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone  horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas,  bass drum, and glockenspiel.  As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for  young, less experienced players.  I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these  parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is  probably the one which will probably need to be played.

Composed by Gustav Mahler. Arranged by Robert L. Anello. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 29 pages. Robert Anello #716008. Published by Robert Anello (A0.1114090).

Gustav Mahler’s “Veni Creator Spiritus†was a new musical setting for the lyrics of a 9th century Latin hymn, originally sung as a Gregorian chant, as an invocation of the Holy Spirit during the celebration of the Christian Feast of Pentecost. This work would comprise the Part I of the symphony with Part II being a setting of the words from the closing scene of “Faust†by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Mahler envisioned the premiere of this new symphony, Number 8, as a massively grand spectacle, with an orchestra not only including strings but a large brass and woodwind section, eight soloists, two full adult choruses, and a children’s choir. The full complement for the premiere was 171 instrumentalists and 858 singers, a total of 1029 musicians, which inspired the promoter to advertise the work as “Symphony of a Thousand.â€

Part I, “Veni Creator Spiritus,†expresses the whole range of human emotions: grand statements expressing the awe of divine majesty alternate with gentle melodic lines of tender love. It combines moments of awesome dramatic tension with the lightness of a fugue. Robert Anello’s arrangement makes this exceptional music accessible to large concert bands while maintaining the essence and flow of Mahler’s original work.

Divertimento actually got its title after I finished composing it during the first months of 2019. While trying to search for appropriate titular words which would somehow describe the content of the piece, I kept thinking how light-hearted the musical flow of the whole composition really is. Searching through similar light minded musical content, I did not have to search for long, before I came across the divertimenti of the late 18th century (works by both Wolfgang A. & Leopold Mozart, Haydn, Stamitz, etc.). The informality and casual manner of my piece, as well as the fact that it draws its thematic material from the concept of “absolute†music - without any presupposed program - reminds me of those times, style and the presented musical form established then. Composed in three movements of which the first two are connected, the piece focuses on brightly illuminated colours of the broad spectre provided to us by a full setting of a symphonic wind orchestra.
