Symphonic Suite is a six-movement composition with a motto theme (actually a short motif) that appears in each movement and provides the basis for much of the thematic content that is developed later one.While the 2nd movement conjures up some Bartókian night music (hence the title Nocturne), its primary inspiration was the Symphony for Band of Vincent Persichetti, and the title Symphonic Suite pays homage to that work, in addition to referencing a great deal of symphonic development of the short motto motif that begins the composition. The keystone center movement is named Elegy in honor of Persichetti, who passed away in 1986, as is the dedication of the entire composition. Although this piece is cast in a different form, and does not try to imitate Persichetti's style, a couple very obvious nods to his symphony can be noticed in this suite.The six movements are: 1. The composition is in the form of 3 settings of the tune that flow together almost imperceptibly. The first and third settings feature the theme woven into various contrapuntal textures, while the second employs a type of cantus firmus technique, where the primary melody is played in double note values in the lower instruments below woodwind figuration derived from the secondary part of the tune. In addition to working with contrapuntal lines and octave-tuning practice, Fantasy on a Hebrew Chant also provides opportunities for teaching the three types of minor scales, exploring how elements of all three are used in the same musical composition. It was originally written in 1747 for his oratorio Joshua, but then reused for Judas Maccabeus in 1751, a practice that Handel--who was never above recycling a good tune--frequently engaged in with his operas and oratorios. The Storms of Time was commissioned by a high school band in Ohio as a memorial to a band member who died in a traffic accident. Although the piece is built on motivic development and has no specific program, the solo alto sax represents the dedicatee, who played that instrument, and the other soloists represent her friends, who express their sense of first loss, then resignation and acceptance after her voice suddenly falls silent near the end.The piece is in ternary form: slow-fast-slow. Slow sections are lyrical and thinly scored, fast section very rhythmic with much mixed irregular meter. Adirondack Sketches was commissioned by the Town of Lake Pleasant, which is located in the southern Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, to celebrate its bicentennial. Written for the local community band (named A Pretty Good Band, Amy Winnie, director), it consists of four short movements, descriptive of my memories of places in and around my home town:            1. Sunrise over Lake Pleasant                A gradual expansion of sound based on the horn call at m. 3 brings the                 lakeshore from predawn darkness to brilliant sunlight.            2. School Picnic at Moffit Beach                A march/scherzo expresses the end-of-school exuberance of the school children.            3. Canoeing on Kunjamuck Creek                A gently flowing passacaglia, with hints of arch form, depicts the calm, wooded creek.            4. Hiking up Hamilton Mountain                An insistent ostinato bass suggests plodding footsteps as a fugue unfolds above, taking                 a group of excited hikers up the trail to the lookout atop the mountain. Shades of Paisano is a transcription, by the composer, of four movements from Paisano Suite, an eight-movement work for orchestra. Paisano is the name of a ranch, located in the central Texas hill country west of Austin,once the private retreat of Texas folklorist and writer J. Frank Dobie. Now owned by the University of Texas, the ranch has for many years been used as a residence for recipients of the prized Dobie Paisano Fellowship, awardedtwice annually to promising Texas writers.Paisano Suite, originally scored for a small pit orchestra, was composed there in the fall of 1982 on a grant from the City of Austin for the Austin Ballet Theatre. The resulting ballet was produced in February, 1983 under the title Ballabile, with choreography by ABT artistic director Stanley Hall. The music was revised and re-orchestrated as a concert suite for full orchestra in 2012 and renamed after the ranch where it was written. Four movements were chosen for this concert band transcription. 1. Scherzo  2. Fugue  3. Romanza   4.
