Despite his short life (1797-1828), Franz Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of Western classical music, including symphonies, sacred music, operas, and a large body of piano and chamber works.  Of all his pieces, perhaps his most famous is his serenade, often referred to as Schubert's Serenade.  This simple arrangement for beginning elementary band will be very likely a favorite on your program.
All parts are written within the range of young elementary grade musicians.  To produce a full sound, many instruments double other instruments, i.e. Eb sax and French horn, low brass and tenor sax, flute and oboe.

Join Right In  That's exactly what the flutes and oboes tell the clarinets!  Next, the clarinets invite the 
Eb sax and French horn to Join Right In .  And in return, the invitation is given to the trumpets!  Lower brass and percussion are involved throughout.  An eight measure trumpet/cornet solo adds even more flavor.  Before you know it, the entire band is involved in playing a lively, upbeat tune with a big, full sounding ending.  Your band members and audience will have a ball with this piece, and it will be a challenge keeping everyone from wanting to Join Right In.

A copy cat imitates and mimics another and a cha-cha is a Latin American dance.  Put them together and you have a vibrant piece where the instruments in the band do just that in a South American style! After a short intro, the trumpets begin with a catchy melody, then the clarinets jump in to repeat it.  
Next, the trumpets reprise what the clarinets and flutes just played!  Then the flutes get their chance to play the melody, the saxes their opportunity, and everybody gets into the act, all the way down to the deep, low brass.  When the piece concludes and the applause dies down, the audience will be humming and whistling this melody all the way to the parking lot!  And this piece will undoubtedly be a favorite of your students as well.

Of all church hymns, a longstanding classic is the upbeat, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms by
A.J. Showalter.  Written all the way back in 1887, I can still hear the choir and congregation belting out this wonderful hymn, while the piano and organ accompany them at full force.  This arrangement for elementary band begins with the verse in a very laid-back, cantabile style.  The chorus then joins in, led by snare drums in a stirring march style.  Great moving lower brass lead all to a big broad ending. This piece is a perennial audience favorite, and one your group will enjoy performing time and again.
