C – Range of about a 12th, some more difficult rhythms. D – Range of about 2 octaves, some rhythmic complexity. This enables the teacher to select parts which are suitable for the standard of individual players in the group. Written around 1820 by Italian composer Saverio Raffaele Mercadante, this engraving of his CONCERTO FOR HORN is in the original key and has been meticulously edited. Consisting of two sections, the beautiful, plaintive opening slow section (Larghetto alla Siciliano) is about 2.5 minutes in length and works well as a stand-alone feature to showcase the sonority of the horn. It would be perfect for a talented high school player. The concluding fast section (Allegretto brillante) is bubbly, delightful, and quite technically challenging in a few spots. The concert band / wind ensemble accompaniment (available separately) is scored to prevent overpowering the soloist and will work with smaller groups for senior recitals, etc. NOTE: This download is for the 4-page SOLO PART ONLY. Composed by Jim Steinman, with a book by Michael Kunze.Transcribing Tanzsaal for concert band was both a challenge and an exciting opportunity to bring this theatrical masterpiece into a new context. Though it contains elements from the 2019 Berlin Cast Recording, the majority of the material is transcribed from the original 1997 Vienna Cast Recording. Most of the original string parts have been given to the saxes and lower clarinets. The upper woodwinds retain the expanded ornamental material from the Berlin production. Two of the melodies prominently featured in this piece are recurring themes throughout the show. Gott ist tot” (God is dead) and Totale Finsternis (Eternal Darkness) appear as both their own numbers, and as incidental melodic material. English listeners may recognize these as Original Sin recorded by Pandora's Box and Meatloaf, and Total Eclipse of the Heart recorded by Bonnie Tyler and many others.

The piece was based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1797 poem of the same name. By far the most performed and recorded of Dukas' works, its notable appearance in the Walt Disney 1940 animated film Fantasia (and its sequel 'Fantasia 2000'), with images of Mickey Mouse and hundreds of marching broomsticks, has led to the piece becoming widely known to audiences outside the classical concert hall. Its first performance was given in Paris on May 18, 1897, conducted by Dukas himself. Arranged for symphonic band, retaining the original key and important solos.
