SHAKER PORTRAITS is a tone poem depicting the life of the Shakers, a religious order known for their simplicity, devotion, and work ethic. The piece is comprised mostly of original melodies, with parts of the beloved Shaker hymn Simple Gifts woven throughout in many variations. The work is broken up into five sections: Sunrise, Working the Fields, At the Spinning Wheel, Afternoon Stroll, and Music Hall Dance.
