It has one foot in traditional entertainment aspects from Wind Band's history, and the other foot in modern choices in tempo, time signature changes (including two juxtaposed feels that will challenge even your best students), along with chordal changes that keep it from sounding 'dated.' I feature several low instruments, giving them the limelight at times and with three mallet instruments written into the score, your melodic percussion have plenty to do. This piece lays well in more than one part of your lconcert line-up, including as  the feature piece.

JalousieJalousie is a tango composed by Danish composer Jacob Gade in 1925.  There are two main themes in the composition.  The first is “a temperamental theme� in D minor followed by a lyrical section in D major.  Gade’s composition has two sources of inspiration.  The first was by a violent thunderstorm that surprised him one day while he was out on a walk.  The other source of inspiration came from a jealousy murder, which was much talked about in those days, and was reported in the newspapers.  The first performance was set for September 14, 1925, and Gade himself played the opening violin cadenza of the tango. Considered a sea chanty, the song was passed on orally by singers on clipper ships. The variations in lyrics that have been collected demonstrate how various singers over the decades have altered the song (consciously or unconsciously). ♫ This arrangement is based on lyrics that were collected prior to 1860 and published in Sea Songs and Shanties by W. B. Whall (1910). There are evidently 2 rivers mentioned in this song, the Shenandoah and the Missouri. The song tells a love story between an impetuous trader and a Shenandoah Valley Native American princess. As the trader heads for the Missouri River, he looks back longingly to the home of the princess. ♫ I have used the Dorian Mode to suggest Native American elements in the story line. The narrative of the song quotes a cowboy singing to the slow or stray dogies as they move along the cattle drive to Wyoming.“Rock Island Line� refers the Rock Island and La Salle Railroad company (established 1947) which soon after became the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad. When construction of the railroad arrived at Rock Island in 1854, it became the first to connect Chicago with the Mississippi River. This folk song references an encounter between an operator of a toll gate and a train engineer who is let through without paying by lying about his payload.
