Spirits. According to the Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, Chisos may be a Native American word meaning “ghost†or “spiritâ€. The Chizo Indians were a nomadic group that used to inhabit Northern Mexico and the Big Bend area of Texas. The Chisos Mountains are the only mountain range contained entirely within the boundaries of a national park.

Spirits. The Terlingua Ghost Town was once the home of thousands of Mexican mercury miners. It is said that the spirits of those miners return to the Terlingua Cemetery annually during Dia de los Muertos to enjoy an evening of celebration and remembrance with their loved ones.

Spirits. Red Ancho. A bowl of red. Each fall, hundreds of spirited culinary adventurers travel to the Big Bend area to extract magic and good times from dried, ruby-red chili pods.

Big Bend National Park and the surrounding area is like no other place on Earth. The people who call this part of Texas home are also like no other. This piece is dedicated to all of them, past and present, and to the land they cherish.

SKU: A0.1114090

Composed by Gustav Mahler. Arranged by Robert L. Anello. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 29 pages. Robert Anello #716008. Published by Robert Anello (A0.1114090).

Gustav Mahler’s “Veni Creator Spiritus†was a new musical setting for the lyrics of a 9th century Latin hymn, originally sung as a Gregorian chant, as an invocation of the Holy Spirit during the celebration of the Christian Feast of Pentecost. This work would comprise the Part I of the symphony with Part II being a setting of the words from the closing scene of “Faust†by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Mahler envisioned the premiere of this new symphony, Number 8, as a massively grand spectacle, with an orchestra not only including strings but a large brass and woodwind section, eight soloists, two full adult choruses, and a children’s choir. The full complement for the premiere was 171 instrumentalists and 858 singers, a total of 1029 musicians, which inspired the promoter to advertise the work as “Symphony of a Thousand.â€

Part I, “Veni Creator Spiritus,†expresses the whole range of human emotions: grand statements expressing the awe of divine majesty alternate with gentle melodic lines of tender love. It combines moments of awesome dramatic tension with the lightness of a fugue. Robert Anello’s arrangement makes this exceptional music accessible to large concert bands while maintaining the essence and flow of Mahler’s original work.

SKU: IZ.CBW171-S

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Marsha Chusmir Shapiro. Score. 21 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CBW171-S. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBW171-S).

9 x 12 in inches.

Feel the Spirit is an arrangement of four pre-Civil War spirituals which were sung by slaves inAmerica. These were
Christian songs which described Bible stories (Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho) or about living with the spirit
of God (Every Time I Feel the Spirit). Sometimes the spirituals described the hardships of slavery (Nobody
Knows the Trouble I've Seen). Most interestingly, some spirituals had hidden meanings. In Swing Low, Sweet
Chariot it appears that the singer is talking about dying and going to heaven, but in actuality, home refers to a
place of freedom, and crossing the river Jordan means overcoming the obstacles to freedom.

Composed by James M. Stephenson. Contemporary. Score and parts. 154 pages. Jim Stephenson Music, Inc. #48491. Published by Jim Stephenson Music, Inc. (A0.1030888).

Premiered May 2, 2013. Notes about the Music: In the spring of 2012, I was in Minnesota attending some performances, and had the fortunate opportunity of catching up with Matthew George, conductor of the Grand Symphonic Winds. Matt had given the world premiere performance of my Concerto for Brass Quintet (Dodecafecta), and has always had a major presence in the formation of new works for winds, so I was very delighted when he brought up the idea of a new work for his group. The Grand Symphonic Winds, in honor of their 25th anniversary, were looking to celebrate the influx of many international cultures which had become a significant part of the landscape in Minnesota. This immediately called out to me in musical terms, namely in the forms of rhythms and spirituality (hence the title!) The piece opens and closes with heroic and beautiful music, signifying (to me) what most cultures seem to all be saying, but in different languages: we all just want peace, harmony and love. The entire middle section is very rhythmic, using many percussion instruments found in different cultures, also represented in Minnesota: Latin America (claves, bongos), Africa (Djembe) and if possible, Southeast Asia (Dholak). And just for fun, I even spelled out Minnesota in Morse code, but this was merely for my own enjoyment! I wish to thank Matt George, for all he has done for the field of music in Wind Ensembles, and specifically to him and the Grand Symphonic Winds for entrusting to me the responsibility of composing this new work, which I truly hope finds its home in the literature. Jim Stephenson March, 2013 Instrumentation: Wind Ensemble – one per part, except: 2 tubas recommended, French Horns doubled Recommended: Rhythm percussion sit in the middle of the ensemble, or immediately in front of the conductor, where visible to audience. Percussion instruments needed: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymb. a2 Claves, Djembe, Marimba, Triangle, Vibes, Bongos (or Dholak) Xylophone, Glock., Tambourine, Sus. Cymb. (if desired, the Dholak could replace the Bongos, using high/low sounds).
