Krebs Trio ♫ for Concert Band with Flexible Instrumentation ♫ by Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780) ♫ arranged by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Johann Krebs was the son of a well-known organist. Krebs studied organ and composition with JS Bach and was highly commended by him. He was one of the most technically gifted young organists of his day, yet was never employed by a major church. Krebs held modest positions all of his life and he and his family of seven children struggled with poverty. ♫ Although underpaid according to his ability and training, Krebs produced a large body of work – 193 known scores. His compositions are judged to be of prime quality, superior enough for scholars to argue whether a piece was composed by him or Bach. His Toccata and Fugue in E for organ is counted one of the masterpieces in Baroque literature. His 2 concertos for lute show that he must have been an accomplished lute player. Krebs was born, studied, lived, & composed in or near Upper Saxony (much like Bach). ♫ Teaching band in a small school, I often needed flexible instrumentation to assure satisfaction for students when a full complement of instruments was not available. This Baroque work from pipe organ literature has been scored for 3 independent polyphonic voices plus an optional percussion part. This piece can be played with almost any combination of instruments or as a trio or quartet. I added an optional hand drum part so percussionists can also participate. PIPPIN is a 1972 musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Roger O. Hirson. Bob Fosse, who directed the original Broadway production, also contributed to the libretto. The musical uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe, led by the Leading Player, to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince on his search for meaning and significance. The 'fourth wall' is broken numerous times during most traditional productions. The protagonist and his father, Charlemagne, are characters derived from two historical figures of the early Middle Ages, though the plot is fictional and presents no historical accuracy. As of January 2024, the original run of Pippin is the 37th longest-running Broadway show. The song 'Corner of the Sky' occurs towards the start of the show, with Pippin addressing the other Players as if they are the professors at his college graduation; he sings of his wish for fulfilment, believing he must find his purpose in life, hence this song being used frequently for graduation ceremonies and other such events. This arrangement retains the original key of A major, which shifts up to B flat major and can be used in conjunction with the choral arrangement by Teena Chinn.

Grandfather’s Clock ♫ by Henry A Work ♫ with Hickory Dickory Dock ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ My Grandfather’s clock was written in 1876 by Henry Clay Work (written in England by an American author.) Our first print record of the poem Hickory Dickory Dock is in 1744. The origin of the music is lost in history. ♫ The teaching point of this piece is to instruct the young band how to switch back and forth from duple and triple time signatures. My method is to count the triplet or duplet inside a pulse (instead of counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). In the fall of 2013, I was approached by Tyler Goodrich White of the Lincoln Symphony who had heard of my interest in composing a holiday piece featuring the surrounding area's Suzuki students, and he gave me the green light with just a couple of stipulations: one, it had to feature the tunes from the Suzuki book, and also needed to be presented in the same order and in the same keys; and two, it needed to be interesting for the audience and the orchestra.

The piece began with those sketches of Suzuki tunes. Interspersed were my original orchestral interludes, what I intended to be a combination of beautiful, dramatic, and playful, with hints of recognizable Christmas tunes woven into the background. Festive Expressions was the resulting composition, which can be performed with or without Suzuki Soloists. It was premiered by Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra on December 7, 2013 with Tyler Goodrich White conducting over 100 Suzuki Soloists on stage.

The Wind Ensemble arrangement, Satana Autumn, was created for Fred J. Allen and the Stephen F. Austin State University Wind Ensemble; it was intended as a gift in response to a wonderful piece he wrote for me when I was a public school teacher.

Abraham’s Daughter: March from the Civil War ♫ by Septimus Winter (1861) ♫ with When Johnny Comes Marching Home by Patrick Gilmore a.k.a. Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,� and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.� ♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter� in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter� pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns� “Listen to the Mockingbird� and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?� ♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? And don't you think I oughter. The volunteers are a-pouring in From every loyal quarter, And I'm goin' down to Washington To fight for Abraham's daughter. ♫ At the beginning of the war, the majority of soldiers, North and South, were fighting to uphold their view of government, each side justifying its position by quoting the Constitution. Southern States saw each State as a sovereign, independent nation. Abraham Lincoln insisted that the United States were one nation. For Abraham Lincoln, the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union.
