Composed by Emile Waldteufel. Arranged by Steven Nunes. 19th Century,Romantic Period. 164 pages. Nagamon Publications #1026528. Published by Nagamon Publications (A0.1446763).

Charles Émile Waldteufel was a French pianist, conductor and composer known for his numerous popular salon pieces.
Les Patineurs (The Ice Skaters, in German Der Schlittschuhläufer-Walzer), It was composed in 1882, inspired by the cercle des patineurs (rink of skaters) at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. The introduction to the waltz can be likened to the poise of a skater, and the rapid runs invoke scenes of a wintry atmosphere. Bells were added for good measure to complete the winter scenery.

This delightful waltz is a perfect choice for any winter concert, or even a cheeky inclusion in a summer program to remind us of the cold weather.

Composed by Richard Strauss. Arranged by Steven Nunes. Opera,Romantic Period. 391 pages. Nagamon Publications #1049975. Published by Nagamon Publications (A0.1472273).

Richard Georg Strauss (11 June 1864 – 8 September 1949) was a German composer and conductor best known for his tone poems and operas. Considered a leading composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras, he has been described as a successor of Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt. Along with Gustav Mahler, he represents the late flowering of German Romanticism, in which pioneering subtleties of orchestration are combined with an advanced harmonic style.

Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose or The Rose-Bearer), Op. 59, is a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is loosely adapted from Louvet de Couvrai's novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas and Molière's comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac.

In 1945 Strauss allowed an orchestral Rosenkavalier Suite to be published, but apparently was not involved in creating it.  It is likely that conductor Artur Rodzi?ski arranged it, as he conducted the suite's first performance, in October 1944 by the New York Philharmonic.

The suite begins with the opera's orchestral prelude, depicting the Marschallin's and Octavian's night of passion (vividly portrayed by whooping horns and saxophones). Next comes the appearance of Octavian as the Rosenkavalier, depicted in tender music; the sight of him looking so young makes the Marschallin realise that he will soon leave her for a younger woman. There follows the duet between Octavian and Sophie – in which their love for each other becomes ever more obvious, but this is abruptly interrupted by the discordant music associated with Ochs's clumsy arrival. Next the violins tentatively introduce the first waltz, followed by another given out by the solo violin, before the whole orchestra settles into waltz mode. A general pause and a violin solo leads into the nostalgic music where the Marschallin sadly realises she has lost Octavian. Then comes its ecstatic climax. The work closes with a singularly robust waltz, depicting Ochs at his most pompous, and a boisterous coda newly composed for the suite.

Composed by Florence Beatrice Price. Arranged by Steven Nunes. 21st Century,Romantic Period. 183 pages. Nagamon Publications #990351. Published by Nagamon Publications (A0.1407735).

Florence Price(b Little Rock, AR, 9 April 1887; d Chicago, IL, 3 June 1953) was the first African American woman to win widespread recognition as a symphonic composer, rising to prominence (with William Grant Still and William Dawson) in the 1930s. After early training with her mother she studied composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Wallace Goodrich and Frederick Shepherd Converse (1903–6) and privately with George Whitefield Chadwick. She gained an Artist’s Diploma (organ) and a piano teacher’s diploma.

In her large-scale works Price’s musical language is often conservative, in keeping with the Romantic nationalist style of the 1920s–40s, but it also reflects the influence of her cultural heritage and the ideals of the “Harlem renaissance†of the 1920s–30s. To her art songs and piano music she brought a thorough knowledge of instrumental and vocal writing, colorful harmonies and exotic modulations.

The Oak from 1943 was originally written for orchestra and has been transcribed for concert band.  The PDF contains the full score and full set of parts.

Composed by Dame Ethel Mary Smyth. Arranged by Steven Nunes. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and Parts. 253 pages. Nagamon Publications #882900. Published by Nagamon Publications (A0.1292281).

Dame Ethel Mary Smyth DBE (22 April 1858 – 8 May 1944) was an English composer and a member of the women's suffrage movement. Her compositions include songs, works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral works and operas.

Smyth tended to be marginalised as a ‘woman composer’ as though her work could not be accepted as mainstream. Yet when she produced more delicate compositions, they were criticised for not measuring up to the standard of her male competitors. Nevertheless, she was granted a damehood, the first female composer to be so honoured.

The Wreckers is an opera in three acts, composed by Dame Ethel Smyth to a libretto in French by Henry Brewster. After spending considerable energy in trying to get the work performed in French, the first performance took place in a German translation by John Bernhoff, under the title of Strandrecht, at the Neues Theater, Leipzig on 11 November 1906. Smyth persisted in her attempts to see it staged elsewhere, but it was not until the conductor Thomas Beecham championed the work that a complete, staged performance was achieved in England in 1909 with funding support from her friend Mary Dodge.

The Overture has been arranged for wind band, and the PDF contains the full score and a full set of parts.
