This is a basic straight-ahead arrangement of the Graduation Song from Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance. It is a quick learn, and although it looks easy at first glance, it should sound great with any size band or string group, second year through professional. The beauty of this arrangement is that it can be performed with just the strings, woodwinds or the brass section or any combination. Just percussion might sound a little thin. It was broadcast on the BBC Light Programme 1948-67, then BBC Radio 2 (sometimes simulcast on BBC Radio 1) 1967-70, and BBC Radio 4 1970-86. The carol was traditionally performed in Coventry in England as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew: the carol itself refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed, and takes the form of a lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children.

The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs.
