William Ward-Higgs  1866 –  1936 was an English lawyer and songwriter who wrote Sussex by the Sea: The unofficial anthem of that county, a regimental march of the Royal Sussex Regiment, and the official song of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.From 1902–08, he lived at Hollywood House in Bersted, West Sussex and wrote Sussex by the Sea when his favourite sister-in-law became engaged to Captain Waithman of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.  This version for Concert Band is in the lower key of Bb which corresponds to the key used in Military Band performances.

John Ireland studied piano with Frederick Cliffe and composition with Charles Villers Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, where he himself taught between 1923 and 1939, his pupils including Benjamin Britten. He worked as organist and choirmaster at St Luke's Chelsea between 1904 and 1926, while developing his career as a composer. Ireland retired in 1953, settling in the hamlet of Rock in Sussex, where he lived in a converted windmill for the rest of his life. It was there he met the young pianist Alan Rowlands who would be Ireland's choice to record his complete piano music.He died of heart failure aged 82 at Rock Mill in Washington, Sussex, and is buried at St. Mary the Virgin in Shipley, near his home. His epitaph reads Many waters cannot quench love and One of God's noblest works lies here. His organ music belongs largely to the early years of his composing career (1902-1911), however, the 'Meditation' on John Keble's Rogationtide Hymn was written in 1958, and was his very last composition. Arranged for concert band, including parts for string bass and contrabass woodwind, as well as attractive moments for Cor Anglais.

Yellow Frame's Harvest Home. The suite is a musical landscape of different points along the Kittatinny mountain ridge in western Sussex County, New Jersey. I. On the Delaware at Carpenter's Point explores a kayaking trip at the very northern point of New Jersey. From the river one can see the High Point monument, the highest point in the state, as one crosses under bridges, passes islands, and speeds through small rapids. II. The Fields of Walpack at Dusk paints the tiny, rural township of Walpack, with its quiet fields and forests. The central theme is In Babilone: an old Dutch melody, echoing the regions colonial-era settlers. III. Yellow Frame's Harvest Home is a fantasy on Come, Ye Thankful People, Come, illustrating the late summer community dinner, Harvest Home run by the Yellow Frame Presbyterian Church, of Fredon township. Other hymn tunes surface in the piece, including May the Lord Mighty God and St. Anne (the colonial-era psalm tune for O God our Help in Ages Past).
