Take My Breath Away is a song written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock for the 1986 film 'Top Gun', performed by American new wave band Berlin. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1986. It was the second single from the film's soundtrack album, following Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone, and Moroder has said that of all the songs he has produced in his career, he is most proud of this track. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and also topped the charts in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland and Belgium. In 2017, ShortList's Dave Fawbert listed the song as containing one of the greatest key changes in music history and that famous moment is retained in this new concert band arrangement featuring vocal or instrumental soloist (parts provided in E flat, B flat and F).

Take My Breath is a song by Canada's the Weeknd and is the first single on his fifth studio album. Play along videos can be found at the YouTube channel Mr Capri Teaches Music or by scanning the QR codes on the score or individual parts.

This piece is in C minor and employs 16th note syncopation in both the melody and bass parts. If students are new to 16th note syncopation, learning the rhythms by ear could be an entry point and can be done using the videos on the above mentioned YouTube channel.  Alternatively, this song provides opportunity to students to learn 16th note counting and reading, should you decide that this is an appropriate learning outcome for your band.

Sometimes we see patterns as events unfold in our lives. Departures was written following and during a time when I witnessed a number of people leaving-moving away, taking a different path in life, or leaving this life altogether. A single, sighing motive unites all three sections of this piece. It is heard right away in the flutes, takes a yearning tone in the middle section, and returns wistfully at the end of the piece. As with every departure in life, one is left wondering what the arrival will be like. The first and last sections of the piece are in a moderate to slow 6/8 while the middle is in 4/4. There are brief solos for horn, alto sax, and oboe (cued in clarinet). The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. This piece was originally written for an ensemble of 18 students to give them something that would engage and/or challenge each player. I wanted to expose them to shifting meters and relied on a minimalist idea for building the groove that drives the piece. It is important to maintain a feeling of motion throughout. The percussion section will be kept busy moving between instruments, and they are featured in the middle-it should sound like magic sparkles. I added traditional instrumentation to this, and there is some writing more difficult than grade 3 (particularly in the oboe part since originally there was no flute). Still, I think it is a fun piece for the right group. The meter is mostly 5/8 with the occasional 6/8 or 4/8 thrown in. The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. The download includes the full score and set of parts.
