Fanfare for the Fallen seeks to honor those who have fallen in service and conjure the image of them marching into their glorious afterlife. Christianity holds that there is no greater love than laying down one's life for another, and many cultures believe that dying in battle yields glory in the great beyond. So whether marching into heaven, Valhalla or some other bright light at the end of the tunnel, let this music provide the soundtrack of trumpeting angels and one last ticker tape parade as these warriors are welcomed into their eternal home.This is a piece of intermediate difficulty with a nice melody and a John Williams' Olympic Fanfare feel to it. While the trumpets soar in their high registers for the heralding sections, the range for the rest of the piece (and the rest of the band) stays mostly in the center of the instruments. This arrangement maintains the power of the tune and represents the beauty of the poetry musically. Each verse has its own special setting corresponding to the words of the hymn. Starting in a mysterious, martial and subdued style, The Love of God develops into a strong but respectful to the hymn type of finale, complete with musical representations of the waves of the sea. It is accessible to High School groups but also appropriate for Community or College ensembles. Because of its history (see below) it can appeal to a wide range of faiths and inspire unity and peace. They are an adaptation and translation of a poem originally written in Aramaic by the Jewish Rabbi of Worms, Germany around the year 1050. This poem in turn is similar to a passage in the Qur'an. What an incredible journey for these great words: an ancient poem that has its roots in the Qur'an, later adapted by a Rabbi, written on the wall of an insane asylum by a patient, and finally taken up by a Christian to be the basis of a beautiful song. It is a mysterious, otherworldly place where trees grow in tangles,knots, and other unfathomable shapes, a place described by local psychics as a point of conflict where great positive and negative forces collide. Due to its remarkable air of mystery, the forest has woven its way into the legends and folklore of the region. My personal favorite legend about it goes as follows: The Prussian prince Barty used to hunt in these forests. Chasing a Roe deer one day, heheard a wonderful tune, and as he came to a field, he saw a beautiful girl playing a lyre. She was a Christian and her name was Predislava. The prince proposed to her but she replied that she would marry only a man of her faith. Prince Barty agreed to become a Christian as long as she could prove the power of her invisible God was more powerful than the surrounding trees. Predislava played her lyre. Birds grew silent, and the trees started dancing. The prince then took a bracelet from his hand and gave it to her as a token of their betrothal. On this very spot, many years later, there grew the Dancing Forest.This piece is my homage to the Dancing Forest of Kaliningrad and all its associated legends. Premiered by the Santa Teresa High School Concert Band in May 2019, the work is scored for a concert band of intermediate size and skill level and is designed to help introduce high school musicians to modal music and unconventional key signatures. Furthermore, the piece is inspired by multiple rhythmic and harmonic elements of rock and folk music in an attempt to help bridge the gap between popular music and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire. We present a work composed as a tongue-in-cheek expression of a popular street tune heard today, put through a series of 5 variations that explore different styles. It works in both a satirical as well as sophisticated manner vertically and horizontally, and uses multiple cliches that will get the audience perking up in recognition. The theme, 贺新年, is a common tune sung in Chinese New Year celebrations. In the heart of celebrating the New Year, this piece is written playable by musicians of all ages, whether in schools or as community orchestras and bands, to come together by the common celebratory notion in a work for an extended orchestra, including the saxophone and euphonium. Written by Daniel Cheng and Jeremy Goh, we hope that this season this piece can bring both laughter and reverence to the street tune, blown out of proportion in style and size. Starting the work is an atonal entry, built on tone rows and planing, legacies of Shoenberg and his contemporaries, before decomposing into an exceedingly lively statement of the theme. This is then juxtaposed beside a trip to tribal communities with interlocking rhythms and a modal distortion of the melody. From the modal mess and deviation from diatonicism, we then return to the prim and proper style of Mozart and Haydn in a short Classical variation. As if to mock its neat stature, this then is shattered with a juxtaposition beside a variation in the style of Shostakovich, modelled after the controversial Leningrad symphony, which draws on a different dimension of the theme, its banality, and propagating and emulsifying it to terrifying levels as it is distorted. Finally, a schreckenfanfare is directed marking an entry into a tribute to one of the greatest legends in music composition, with Beethoven along with its transcendental qualities of cyclism, and use of learned styles, methods of maintaining tension etc., bringing a grand ending to the 10 minute long work.

From this position of power earned on the battlefield, Solon was able to institute reforms and a new manner of governance. At a time when a high percentage of the people were steeped in indentured servitude due to crushing debt owed to a small percentage of aristocrats, his reforms were in no way popular, however they paved the way towards modern day democracy. Solon: Lawgiver of Athens depicts Athens during this time as Solon comes to power. You will hear the great city-state of Athens, the senate in turmoil, Solon shouting down the din, speaking calmly and with measured reason, and eventually you will hear a move towards a major tonality of the themes as Solon’s reforms take hold and social and economic stability is once again established. This piece was written to commemorate the opening of the Solon Center for the Arts in 2017 and was first performed by Solon High School Band in Solon, IA.

It's called 'Setting the Watch' and is inspierd by the Ripon Hornblower with the tradition going back over a thousand years to Saxon times when Viking raids were common occurrences and people lived in fear of their property, livestock and even lives being lost in night-time attacks. In 886, the English King was Alfred the Great and he made it his mission to visit his people bringing a message of safety and stability. In Ripon he granted the people a Royal Charter and gave them a symbolic horn as a gift, advising them that they should be always alert to the dangers of invaders. The people of Ripon decided to employ a night watchman that they called a “wakemen� to patrol from dusk until dawn ready to sound the horn gifted by the King should he spot any trouble approaching. For further reassurance, the wakeman sounded the horn at each of the four corners of the market place at 9pm every night to let the people know that he was on duty and they could sleep easily. This sounding of the horn at 9pm became known as setting the watch.

Nearer, My God, to Thee arranged for Young Concert Band, is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…. The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank. It stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson. Set in 1985, the story follows Marty McFly (Fox), a teenager accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean automobile built by his eccentric scientist friend Doctor Emmett Doc Brown (Lloyd). Trapped in the past, Marty inadvertently prevents his future parents' meeting-threatening his existence-and is forced to reconcile the pair and somehow get back to the future. Back to the Future was conceived of in 1980 by Gale and Zemeckis. They were desperate for a successful film after numerous collaborative failures, but their idea was rejected over 40 times by studios because it was not considered raunchy enough to compete with the successful comedies of the era. A development deal was secured following Zemeckis' success directing Romancing the Stone (1984). Fox was the first choice to portray Marty, but he was unavailable; Eric Stoltz was cast instead. Shortly after principal photography began in November 1984, Zemeckis determined Stoltz was not right for the part and made the concessions necessary to hire Fox. This included re-filming scenes already shot with Stoltz and adding $4 million to the budget. Back to the Future was filmed in and around California and on sets at Universal Studios. Published by Zack Richards (A0.894397). Throughout my youth, I was highly influenced by Science Fiction, especially Star Trek: The Next Generation. It inspired me from a creative, musical, and human perspective and was a large factor in most of my current views of the world in which we all live. This work is largely inspired by that show as well as other Star Trek shows and movies. The title is inspired by the idea of space, called the final frontier throughout Star Trek. The first melody pulls many aspects from the The Original Series, including the opening interval of a minor 7th, the rhythmic use of triplets, and the chromatic intervals in the second half of the melody. It sits over quartal harmonies which help create the open spacey sound. The countermelody introduced by the Oboe in measure 13 is inspired intervalically and rhythmically by the 2009 Star Trek reboot movie theme. These 2 melodies are used in various ways from start to finish, sometimes rhythmically diminished, sometimes just as a motif passed from one instrument to another. Every section has a moment to shine like a distant star in this fun sci-fi inspired piece.

It premiered on 18 June 1821 at the Schauspielhaus Berlin and is considered to be the first German  Romantic opera. The overture is in sonata form and may be regarded as a compressed tone poem about the Freischütz story. The arrangement is kept in the  original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed (without Euphonium and Tuba) by Mozarteum Wind  Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their New Year's Concert on 6 January 2008 at the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation in  Salzburg, then again at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2018 at the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and  broadcasted live by Austrian television. A further repetition at the same event on 6 January 2024 again with live TV, now under the new name Salzburg Wind  Philharmonic underlines the great appreciation for this arrangement shown by the orchestra and conductor.
