Back to School 2015 This standalone movement balances chaotic, breakneck ensemble writing with placid, luscious quieter moments. Inspired by the fifth chapter of the Book of Revelation, the music vividly depicts the duality of the lion/lamb character (hence the plurality of the title), and the ample use of mixed meter and solo opportunities (particularly for flute and percussion) will offer an engaging challenge to most high school ensembles. Although this is the middle movement of a three-movement work, it works in its own self-contained world. It was this sense of duality that persuaded me to keep the s at the end of Revelation in the title – it is as if there are multiple revelations to be found within both the scripture and my musical interpretation of it. In the book of Revelation, the prophet John is sharing an apocalyptic vision to a group of churches in Asia as a means of hope – even though these people were being persecuted for their beliefs, John promises the rapture in which God will save the believers and destroy the nonbelievers. The fifth chapter begins with John’s ascension to heaven, and it concludes just before the Christ-like Lion of Judah breaks the seals of the scroll that will unleash the rapture. While this is intended to be a message of hope, it will also bring about cataclysmic death and destruction. Herein lies the duality – how can a message of hope come as the result of such a violent outcome? Movement II (of three) corresponds with only verse 6, and it is more of a character study than a programmatic narrative. It examines the Lion of Judah character, which is portrayed at first as an overwhelming and aggressive figure after it approaches from the distance in the hazy beginning section. This character is also depicted in the scripture as a lamb, though, and this is reflected in the piece’s latter half, which is a softer reimagining of the Lion character’s material. The Lion and the Lamb are not two different characters but, rather, different sides of the same character. It is this duality that drives the movement, and it explains the connections between these otherwise distinct sections. This movement was originally performed by the CCPA Wind Ensemble in April 2010 when it received first place in CCPA’s wind ensemble composition contest.

Boat Symphony is my second symphony for concert band. Initially inspired by a maritime festival, I decided to write some music that would seem best suited for such an event. After initially writing the Seafarers March and Maiden Voyage, I decided to expand the idea out to a full symphony based loosely on maritime mythology and themes.

In the late 1990s, a score was found in Germaine Tailleferre’s papers with the title page “Choral et Fugue pour orchestre d’harmonie� and a dedication “à L'Harmonie Municipale de Lyon�. The pages which followed contained the score of “Choral� for organ with optional brass and “Fugue� for orchestra. When the late composer Desiré Dondeyne was consulted concerning this score, he confirmed that this work had been projected, but refused to say anything further on the subject. Research was undertaken to try to locate a scale in the municipal archives of the City of Lyons (as the Municipal Band no longer exists) but proved to be unsucessful. It is unclear whether or not Tailleferre intended to undertake this work herself or if she intended to entrust it (as she often did) to Dondeyne. In any case, it would appear that the concert band version for this work was probably never completed. Paul Wehage, a longtime scholar of the works of Tailleferre, has undertaken the orchestration of this work The Fugue movement remains close to Tailleferre’s original version for orchestra. The choral section is entirely rescored. Instrumentation : Piccolo Flute I and II Oboe I and II English Horn Bassoon 1 and II Eb clarinet Bb clarinet I, II and III Alto Clarinet Bass Clarinet Alto Saxophone I and II Tenor Saxophone Baritone Saxophone Bb Cornet I, II and III Bb trumpet I and II F Horn I-IV Trombone I, II and III Baritone Tuba Timpani Percussion 1: snare drum Percussion II: bass drum Percussion III: triangle, two cymbals, xylophone, suspended cymbal duration ca. 7:00 This set contains the full score. I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In) is a traditional and popular Christmas carol from England. The earliest printed version of I Saw Three Ships is from the 17th century, possibly Derbyshire, and was also published by William Sandys in 1833.

The lyrics mention the ships sailing into Bethlehem, but the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea about 20 miles (32 km) away. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the three ships that bore the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Another possible reference is to Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia, who bore a coat of arms Azure three galleys argent. Another suggestion is that the ships are actually the camels used by the Magi, as camels are frequently referred to as ships of the desert. [Wikipedia]
