Messiah (HWV 56) is an English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel. The text was compiled from the King James Bible and the Coverdale Psalter[n 2] by Charles Jennens. It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 and received its London premiere nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. Good King Wenceslas is a Christmas carol that tells a story of a Bohemian king who goes on a journey, braving harsh winter weather, to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen (December 26, the Second Day of Christmas). During the journey, his page is about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but is enabled to continue by following the king's footprints, step for step, through the deep snow. The legend is based on the life of the Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia (907–935), who was not a king in his lifetime but had that status conferred on him after his death. In 1853, English hymnwriter John Mason Neale wrote the lyrics in collaboration with his music editor Thomas Helmore to fit the melody of the 13th-century spring carol Tempus adest floridum, which they had found in the 1582 Finnish song collection Piae Cantiones. The carol first appeared in Carols for Christmas-Tide, published by Novello & Co the same year.

Composed by Thomas Weelkes. Arranged by Kyle Skrivanek. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Renaissance. Score and parts. 73 pages. Kyle Skrivanek #2890997. Published by Kyle Skrivanek (A0.980052).

As Vesta Was From Latmos Hill Descending tells the story of the Roman Goddess Vesta descending from a mythical hill and encountering the maiden queen, Oriana, ascending. The English composer and organist Thomas Weelkes composed this madrigal as part of a series of madrigals honoring Queen Elizabeth I known as The Triumphes of Oriana (Queen Elizabeth I was often called Oriana). Weelkes employed the technique of word painting in his composition and I maintained as much as possible in this arrangement for concert band. This arrangement is playable by advanced middle school and high school ensembles.

ā€œGod Rest You Merry, Gentlemenā€
is a traditional English Christmas carol dating to the mid 17th Century. It was referenced by Charles Dickens in his 1843 novella ā€œA Christmas Carolā€ but with the lyric:

ā€œGod bless you, Merry Gentleman!
May nothing you dismay!ā€

The phrase ā€œGod rest you merryā€ historically meant ā€œmay God grant you peace and happinessā€. ā€œRest you merryā€ was used both in Shakespeareā€™s ā€œAs You Like Itā€ and ā€œRomeo and Julietā€. Over time, there has been confusion over this title due to changes in common language usage. The word ā€˜merryā€™ is an adverb of rest and not an adjective of Gentlemen.

ā€œPat-A-Panā€ is a traditional Burgundian French Christmas carol written by Bernard de La Monnoye and published in 1720. The text calls for the bringing of a drum and flute to play for newborn Jesus Christ in worship. The title is onomatopoeic for the sound of a drum, as is the additional lyric ā€œtu-re-lu-re-luā€ for the sound of a flute.

ā€œYigdalā€ is a Jewish hymn and prayer that is a poetic adaptation of Maimonidesā€™ 13 principles of faith. The text is attributed to 14th century poet Daniel ben Judah. The melody dates to the 17th century or earlier. It is traditionally sung for morning prayer and as the conclusion of Shabbat evening services. Upon hearing Yigdal, English Methodist Thomas Olivers adapted this melody for use in his Christian hymn ā€œThe God of Abraham Praiseā€, which is a paraphrase of the ben Judah doxology, and was first published in 1772.

ā€œMerry! Donā€™t You Know?ā€ is a playful melding of these sacred songs, acting as a reminder that Christmas is a time to be merry and joyful as we celebrate the nature, power, and love of God.

This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's four-some edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the room music quality of the original shines through in this skillful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen. (3:35)

Composed by Frederick Delius. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Classical,Film/TV,Romantic Period. 80 pages. John Ivor Holland #903747. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1314999).

Born in 1862 in Bradford, Yorkshire into a merchant family, the young Delius shunned attempts of a career in commerce and, whilst in America for a short time, began composing, going on to study in Germany and then in Paris. Thanks to English conductor, Thomas Beecham, the works of Delius began to gain more recognition and this lovely work is taken from one of his six operas ('A Village Romeo and Juliet'), with whom he collaborated with his wife, Jelka, on the libretto. While the opera has rarely been staged, this orchestral interlude between Scenes 5 and 6, The Walk to the Paradise Garden, is heard separately in concerts and has been recorded many times, lasting approximately 9 minutes. Arranged for advanced bands for the first time, the original key is retained and the Harp part shared between vibraphone and glockenspiel.
