The undulating hills stretching endlessly beneath the warm embrace of the setting sun served as the impetus for this composition. Written for the Chapman High School Band, the march captures the essence of the picturesque landscape surrounding the school.The piece is loosely characterized as a pastoral march, reflecting the intention to infuse harmonies and melodies that resonate with the spirit of Americana. Drawing inspiration from how Aaron Copland's music mirrors the landscapes it depicts, the composition aims to create a sonic representation of the visual beauty of Inman.Not adhering strictly to traditional march conventions, the piece incorporates a lush trio section, enhancing the overall sense of grandeur and tranquility. The song is sung from the perspective of children who, upon seeing the Christ Child, ask “What should we give to the Child of the Mother?� First they choose their best-tasting foods: raisins, figs, walnuts and olives; then, a blanket for warmth from the cold. Finally, angels descend from Heaven to cradle the Child, singing “songs of glory that are not of the world.�The carol may date from 18th-century Catalonia, which is today an autonomous community of Spain lying mostly on the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with Barcelona — Spain's second-most populous city — as its capital.The Spanish guitar master Andres Segovia (1893-1987) often performed Miguel Llobet's (1878-1938) transcription of this simple, lovely tune as an encore.This arrangement is an ideal vehicle to teach lyrical playing and legato style; dynamic control and the shaping of phrases; and the “handing-off� of phrases and phrase segments from one section to another to sustain and complete a musical idea. Published by BJE Music (A0.750927). I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In) is a traditional and popular Christmas carol from England. The earliest printed version of I Saw Three Ships is from the 17th century, possibly Derbyshire, and was also published by William Sandys in 1833. The lyrics mention the ships sailing into Bethlehem, but the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea about 20 miles (32 km) away. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the three ships that bore the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Another possible reference is to Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia, who bore a coat of arms Azure three galleys argent. Another suggestion is that the ships are actually the camels used by the Magi, as camels are frequently referred to as ships of the desert.
