Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1518069 Composed by Edward Elgar. Arranged by James Symington. 20th Century,Classical,Film/TV,Historic,Patriotic. 29 pages. James Edward Ernest Symington #1092231. Published by James Edward Ernest Symington (A0.1518069). The name of the variation refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod” variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Flex-Band has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.1030888 Composed by James M. Stephenson. Contemporary. Score and parts. 154 pages. Jim Stephenson Music, Inc. #48491. Published by Jim Stephenson Music, Inc. Premiered May 2, 2013. Notes about the Music: In the spring of 2012, I was in Minnesota attending some performances, and had the fortunate opportunity of catching up with Matthew George, conductor of the Grand Symphonic Winds. Matt had given the world premiere performance of my Concerto for Brass Quintet (Dodecafecta), and has always had a major presence in the formation of new works for winds, so I was very delighted when he brought up the idea of a new work for his group. The Grand Symphonic Winds, in honor of their 25th anniversary, were looking to celebrate the influx of many international cultures which had become a significant part of the landscape in Minnesota. This immediately called out to me in musical terms, namely in the forms of rhythms and spirituality (hence the title!) The piece opens and closes with heroic and beautiful music, signifying (to me) what most cultures seem to all be saying, but in different languages: we all just want peace, harmony and love. The entire middle section is very rhythmic, using many percussion instruments found in different cultures, also represented in Minnesota: Latin America (claves, bongos), Africa (Djembe) and if possible, Southeast Asia (Dholak). And just for fun, I even spelled out Minnesota in Morse code, but this was merely for my own enjoyment! I wish to thank Matt George, for all he has done for the field of music in Wind Ensembles, and specifically to him and the Grand Symphonic Winds for entrusting to me the responsibility of composing this new work, which I truly hope finds its home in the literature. Jim Stephenson March, 2013 Instrumentation: Wind Ensemble – one per part, except: 2 tubas recommended, French Horns doubled Recommended: Rhythm percussion sit in the middle of the ensemble, or immediately in front of the conductor, where visible to audience. Percussion instruments needed: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymb. a2 Claves, Djembe, Marimba, Triangle, Vibes, Bongos (or Dholak) Xylophone, Glock., Tambourine, Sus. Cymb. (if desired, the Dholak could replace the Bongos, using high/low sounds).

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1433964 Composed by Nick Peterson. Classical. 115 pages. Nick Peterson #1014194. Published by Nick Peterson (A0.1433964). This piece features 4 movements, and tells a story throughout. It starts with a slow moving part with the flute section taking the melody as well as a flute solo. It then moves to a fast and exciting movement, but eventually levels out. In the same movement, there is a low section where the melody layers on top of other lines. The 2nd movement then ends with a percussion break. The 3rd Movement has a Latin feel to it and starts with percussion, where they set up a consistent groove. Then we build to eventually the melody and trade it between altos, and the flutes, and oboe. Then the melody repeats trading between trumpets and clarinets. Throughout this, the low instruments set up a consistent rhythm while moving through the changes. Then the 3rd movement comes to an end. The last and final movement features a clarinet solo to start it off, which gives a nod to Rhapsody in Blue. It closes off with an alto solo to end it. The piece changes keys from Eb-Bb-Db-Eb.

Concert Band - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.942740 Composed by Frank Pugh. Instructional. Score and parts. 26 pages. Frank Pugh #6871981. Published by Frank Pugh (A0.942740). Fracas Attackas is a fun piece for beginning band that is composed using the first five notes of the concert Bb scale. There are two basic wind parts doubled throughout the instruments, and the mallets closely follow the winds up until the bridge of the piece. There are four more percussion parts, but the piece may be performed with only snare drum and bass drum. If you have the players, add the crash cymbals and then the toms to fill out the parts.     A fracas is defined as a noisy quarrel or brawl. Attackas is, of course, just a made-up word, but it rhymes quite nicely! I hope you and your band have a lot of fun with this piece!    Be sure to check out my other works here on Sheet Music Plus, and don't forget to look up my original works at Five Stone Music.   You can email Five Stone Music at five5stonemusic@gmail.com, and please visit the Five Stone Music website at https://five5stonemusic.wixsite.com/productions You can also stop by our Facebook page:  @5stonemusicThanks for listening!

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1438470 By Graham Hamilton. By Graham Hamilton. 21st Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 93 pages. Hambone Music #1018489. Published by Hambone Music (A0.1438470). A beautiful slow melody in 4/4 followed by a rousing 6/4 trek with fanfares then returning to the slow melody in 4/4. Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and intermediate level concert bands, school bands and symphonic wind ensembles should manage it easily. Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery.Part 2  It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme.Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind.  No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination.Part 4  The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.
