Sea Time is a Quick March for concert band, it has various bugle calls and tunes associated with The Royal Marines and Royal Navy dotted around the piece which reflects my time spent in various establishments and onboard various ships whilst serving in The Royal Marines Band Service.

This is an orchestral arrangement by Marco A Perez of a piece of mine in 11-time, which has appeared in various other forms (Reed 11 (wind trio), The Bishop is forced to Dance (clarinet quartet), The Last Village on Earth (crumhorns and various) - which can also be found on SheetMusicPlus) As Marco is more familiar with percussion instruments than I am, I suggested a collaboration - (the first of many, I expect), and this is the result. Flexercise for young bands is a valuable tool for teaching various techniques. The eight exercises are a combination of finger slurs for the woodwinds, lip slurs for brass, and various percussion techniques. The exercises may be used in sectionals or full band rehearsals. In the clarinet part suggestions for slurring from open G to B or C are given. In trumpet, baritone, and trombone parts alternate fingerings and positions are suggested. Tempo and dynamics are not marked. Each band will have different needs in these areas.

The significance of Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre lies in its representation of death as the great social equalizer and its association with Halloween and the macabre. Originally an art song for voice and piano, the piece was later expanded and reworked into a tone poem for violin and large orchestra, becoming one of Saint-Saëns' most famous works.

Representation of Death: Danse Macabre was inspired by the French legend that Death plays the fiddle at midnight on Halloween, causing the skeletons in the cemetery to crawl out of their graves for a dance party. The theme of death as the great social equalizer, where no one can escape the dance with death, is depicted in the music and has inspired various paintings and art pieces.

Composition and Reception: The piece is in the key of G minor and scored for an obbligato violin and an orchestra of various instruments.  When it was first performed in 1875, Danse Macabre received mixed reviews, with some critics expressing anxiety due to its dissonance, use of a xylophone, and hypnotic repetitions. However, it is now considered one of Saint-Saëns' masterpieces and is widely regarded and reproduced in high and popular culture.

This essential collection may be all you ever need for your wind instruments at Christmas. It's a bargain price too! These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The publication consists of a four-staff score in concert pitch together with fifteen separate parts in various transpositions plus a simplified optional keyboard part. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. These four-part arrangements use flexible instrumentation so that you can exercise considerable control over the instrumental voicing or use them for non-standard ensembles. You can also create interesting instrumental tone color by omitting groups of instruments. If the ensemble is large enough you could omit brass instruments in the quieter sections, or use a solo trumpet against a woodwind background. There are endless possibilities.
The complete set includes: Part 1 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 2 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 3 in B flat, E flat, F and C and Part 4 in B flat, E flat and C. Parts 1 and 2 in C have been printed an octave higher than the pitch shown in the score because invariably the parts lie too low for flute or oboe. For elementary players, a Part 1 in C (low) is included at concert (score) pitch. Parts 3 and 4 in C are in the bass clef. The arrangements could be played by virtually any combination of conventional wind band instruments. Using the optional keyboard part they could also be used as solos, duets or trios. The scores and all the parts are contained in a single 190-page PDF file. From composer James Horner (Titanic, Enemy at the Gates, Iris) comes this wonderful, enigmatic theme, featured in the Ron Howard film 'A Beautiful Mind' (starring Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connolly). The soundtrack was created using various mathematical elements, following the subject of the film, but brought together with the sound of a young girl's voice (Charlotte Church); this arrangement features the cor anglais to add that certain vocal quality and there is also a lovely solo for alto saxophone. Perfect for a concert themed around love but also great for movie nights.

Antique Sketches was composed with the intention of creating an accessible work for young band using counterpoint. Some of my favorite memories as a student in public school band include performing various arrangements of J.S. Bach. I loved sitting in the trumpet section listening across the ensemble to how the various melodic lines would rapidly fizz around from instrument to instrument.

This short, two movement work is designed to foster this listening experience in your students. The first movement consists of a simple binary form, with woodwinds and brass trading off a slow melodic line. The ensemble then combines to allow for the exploration of top to bottom, back to front balance and blend without having to worry about too much technique. There are also moments of modernity in the harmonic structure designed to help anchor the movement to the present.

The second movement is a fugue with a long melodic subject and two countersubjects, the point of which is to apply the listening lessons from the first movement to the more technical aspects of the second. Fugue subjects are announced with percussion entrances to focus the listening experience across the ensemble and the audience.

Stallion was composed for the 2024 Aiken County Honor Band Clinic, inspired by the rich equestrian heritage of the local area. Differing from many “horse-themed” band pieces with a Western motif, this composition captures the majestic galloping and playful nature of horses. It showcases various characteristics of these magnificent animals, providing a fresh perspective on equestrian-inspired band music.

The piece begins serenely and then snaps into excitement like a horse galloping across rolling hills, a depiction of majestic galloping music. To illustrate the range of characters expressed by horses, various instruments and combinations are utilized, showcasing instrumental combinations in band music. The B Section introduces a more suspenseful, cinematic feel, typical of suspenseful band sections, ultimately leading to a key change to F Major. This key change brings a triumphant and brighter iteration of the original theme, culminating in a strong finish, embodying the essence of a triumphant band finale.
