I was commissioned to write this arrangement for band from a piano piece discovered in an antique store by Mitch Sturman, director of the Woodrow Wilson Junior High School Band in El Centro, California. Given the title of the piece, and the fact that Mr. Sturman was the band director at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School, he was immediately drawn to the piece.  He researched the work and could only find an identical copy at the Library of Congress.  No version for band was found, even after checking with the Marine Corps Band, The President's Own, which had performed at the Inauguration.  This band arrangement received its premiere by The Wilson Junior High School Band on May 25, 2016, at the Jimmie Cannon Performing Arts Theatre, El Centro, CA, with the arranger conducting. .

Commissioned by Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Band in El Centro, California in 2014 for his 8th Annual Concert of Premieres, the work features a solo trumpet in a quiet piece with both a 40's big band feel and a reminiscence of the Western cowboy influence felt in the Imperial Valley of California.  The work was premiered by 7th grade trumpeter Precious Esquer and the Wilson Jr. H. S. Band with the composer conducting on May 21, 2015, in the Wilson Jr. High School Gymnasium, El Centro, California.  Versions are also available for with the solo part covered by flute, oboe, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bassoon, French horn, baritone horn (TC or BC), trombone, or tuba. It can be used for technical purposes (warming up/tuning, for example) or for a performance piece showcasing tone and sensitivity. It can be used art the beginning of every rehearsal, and performers can even sing their parts as an additional exercise. It is a sacred piece of music, but is completely appropriate for students and schools. I use it with my own concert bands. It would be appropriate in religious settings as well. The accompanying mp3 track can be used a a reference for learning the piece. It is brief, lasting about 1.25 minutes.

Originally the Violin Concerto in E major, D.53, Guiseppe Tartini’s concerto was transcribed for the piccolo trumpet by Maurice André and has remained a popular repertoire choice for trumpet players ever since. All three movements of the work are here arranged in the key of Eb (not D!) for piccolo trumpet in Bb and wind band (including 2 flute parts, oboe, bassoon, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 alto saxes, tenor sax, bari sax, 2 trumpets, 2 horns, 2 trombones, BC and TC euphonium, tuba, and timpani).  Performance time is generally around 10 or 11 minutes.  Please note that the parts for the accompanying ensemble are at an early intermediate level, as indicated on this page, but the solo part for piccolo trumpet is very challenging.

Edmondson (1933-2016).  Mr. Sturman had commissioned new works for the Wilson Jr. H. S. Warrior Band in El Centro, CA for nine years for annual Concerts of Premieres.  John B. Edmondson, one of America's leading composers of educational music, with over 800 compositions and arrangements in his catalog, had been commissioned by Mitch seven times for new works, including his last ever composition, Imperial County Impressions performed in May, 2016, prior to Mr. Sturman's retirement in June, 2016.  The first commission John had made for Mitch was his Serenade for Solo Clarinet and Band.  Mitch felt it would be a fitting tribute for me to compose a work also for solo clarinet and band.  This was composed for a memorial tribute concert for John B. Edmondson at Wilson Junior High School on April 6, 2017, where the seven pieces commissioned for the Wilson Band would be performed.  The solo clarinet, first clarinet, and first trumpet require moderately experienced players to play the parts musically.  All the rest of the parts are easily handled by a typical junior high school band.

It is structured like a rag or circus march, but with less syncopation than a rag and more pounding rhythms than a typical circus march.   This arrangement features a solo brass quintet, backed up by a full concert band.   This toe-tapper is a wonderful light piece for an outdoor concert or an informal indoor concert.   Parts include the full brass quintet, 2 flutes, 1 oboe, 1 bassoon, 2 clarinets, 1 bass clarinet, 2 alto saxophones, 1 tenor saxophone, 1 baritone saxophone, 3 trumpets, 4 French horns, 3 trombones, 1 euphonium (includes BC and TC part), 1 tuba, and parts for crash cymbals, snare drum, bass drum, bells, xylophone, and timpani.
