Almost everybody and his mother on the Planet have written their own arrangements of Amazing Grace so I guess I should not be the exception. Amazing Grace (And Then some) is written for Solo Tuba, accompanied by a wind band. I was inspired to write this chart by a young man named Brandon Jones who lives in the Mobile, Alabama area. He was about 20 years old at the time of this writing (in 2012). He wanted to dedicate it to his father who had died when Brandon was about 4 or 5 years old. My arrangement of Amazing Grace (And Then Some) is not just another theme and variations type of work. Instead, I have interwoven two additional hymns (Praise to the Lord, the Almighty and I Will Sing of My Redeemer) in order to break up the monotony of just the one hymn (hence the subtitle And Then Some) Oh, did I mention that Brandon plays a C tuba that was passed down from his father?

I originally wrote a Brass Band version of this work to be performed by the Freedom Brass Band of Northeast Ohio in the summer of 2011 knowing that I wanted it to be connected to a well-known patriotic text. It quickly became my most popular work and I decided to arrange it for Concert Band in 2018. Because it was adapted from a Brass Band setting, some of the instrument ranges are more advanced, but can still work for an advanced high school or college band.From a young age I found inspiration in Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. As a Boy Scout, I had read it at an annual service on Memorial Day. I had also studied it in school and even heard it spoken by a Lincoln impersonator. The words from this address speak to the ideals of human equality and freedom, and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect those ideals. Pano had heard many beautiful arrangements of the work by Billy Joel, but wanted something for the wind band medium that he could use for his guest clinicianship with the Region 1 All-Region Symphonic Band. The result is this arrangement, which works well for strong high school bands and collegiate ensembles alike. The piece has many opportunities for lyrical artistic moments, but also works well in a straightforward manner for ensembles with little rehearsal time. It is designed to be somewhat flexible with instrumentation, to accommodate the naturally diverse instrumentations of bands of all sizes.

Stoller’s was chosen out of half-a-dozen submissions to be the show’s new theme, and show runners at the time had simply briefed entrants to compose ‘something good’. Stoller used a multitrack recorder and enlisted the help of two of his friends to record the iconic theme in his East London basement.  In May 2010, British copyright collective PRS for music, revealed that the 'Match of the Day' tune was the most recognisable TV theme in the UK. From a private residence to screens across the nation, over 50 years later, this iconic theme sums up everything to do with the 'beautiful game' and now freshly available for concert band.

In addition, New York City had a number of television stations that offered them as well. What all of these films and television programs had in common was, that they always had a strong, catchy and folksy theme. Prime examples were the themes to Bonanza, Wyatt Earp, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.I wrote The Opening of The West with the goal of having some catchy, folksy and iconic themes that people would remember. I would like to think that this could eventually become an iconic western score.

The soundtrack was released on 21 July 2023, the same day as the film's theatrical release in the United States. At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards it won Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media, and at the 96th Academy Awards was nominated for Best Original Score. While the film is a period piece and Göransson used instrumentation that fitted with the 1940s, he also wanted the score to feel timeless, choosing to infuse the traditional orchestra with synthesizers; he and Nolan also chose not to include drums in the score at the risk of it feeling militaristic, instead incorporating percussive elements such as foot stomping, ticking, and Geiger counter static - 'Fusion' has been arranged from the score with the traditional concert band in mind, but adding extra woodwind depth with contrabassoon and contrabass clarinet; if your string bass player tunes down to low C, that will help to create the menacing atmosphere of the original.

John Philip Sousa wrote it in 1876 probably at the tender age of 21 (he was born on Monday 6 November 1854 in Washington D. C.). Even at this point in his life about 4 years prior to his being appointed the 17th Director of the United States Marine Band Sousas writing style was already established. He also had traces of savvy for what the audiences wanted to hear for he used the hymn In the Sweet By and By as the melody for the trio (he did a similar trick later in his life when he used Onward Christian Soldiers written by his good friend Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan of Gilbert and Sullivan fame as the melody of the trio for his march Power and Glory).

'Laura' is a 1944 American film noir produced and directed by Otto Preminger, starring Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews and Vincent Price. In 1999, 'Laura' was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and the American Film Institute named it one of the 10 best mystery films of all time. Once the principal photography had been completed, Preminger hired David Raksin to score the film. The director wanted to use Sophisticated Lady by Duke Ellington for the main theme, but Raksin objected. Alfred Newman, music director for Fox, convinced Preminger to give Raksin a weekend to compose an original tune. Furious, Preminger gave Raksin that weekend, but threatened him with dismissal in case he failed; ultimately, Preminger was so pleased with Raksin's score that he collaborated with him on four more films. The haunting theme can be heard throughout the film and this arrangement has been constructed from an exquisite choir and piano version by British composer Roderick Williams - vibraphone features quite extensively but cued as necessary if not available.

I was commissioned by Bill Park of the North Roy-alton Community Band of North Royalton Ohio in early 2011. He wanted me to write a piece similar to one that contained familiar tunes from the Looney Toons cartoons of Warner Brothers that would sound like music used by the Little Rascals and Laurel & Hardy movies of the early 1930s. If you have ever seen these old movies you will notice that the music in the soundtrack never did coincide with what was happening on the screen (with the exception of a funny or romantic moment or a chase scene). It is as if you were watching a movie in your living room and some-body in the next room was playing his stereo just loud enough for you to notice the music. Well thats how I wrote Rascals! trying to keep Mr. Shields writing style intact while integrating my own style without covering him up. Rascals! was premiered by the North Royalton Community Band in their hometown in May 2011 and was well received by both the band and the audience.
